Replacing the drain pump in the washing machine

Replacing a washing machine pumpIn the modern market of household appliances, there are many different models of washing machines. And depending on which model we will change the pump (pump for), we will decide how we will get to it.

Install a new pump through the bottom of the washing machine

This method of replacing the drain pump will be relevant for most machines of the following manufacturers: Indesit, Samsung, Beko, Ardo, Whirpool, Candy, LG, Ariston. In the design of these models there is no bottom or it is removable. Therefore, replacing the pump is easier from the bottom.

The most common replacement pumps used are Ascall. They are fixed on three screws.

  1. First, turn off the washing machine from electricity and turn off the tap.
  2. Then gently put the washing machine on its side, laying something in order not to scratch the case. It is necessary to lay the machine so that the angle with the pump is at the top.
  3. Then remove the bottom front panel of the machine.
  4. After that, unscrew the screws securing the drain pump to the housing.
  5. Prepare an empty container. We need it when we disconnect the pipes. During the removal of the nozzles, water will flow from them.
  6. We remove the nozzles, loosening and removing the pre-clamps. And disconnect the connector with wires.
  7. Next, take a new working pump and install it in place of the old one.
  8. Now we just have to assemble the machine, return it to an upright position and conduct a test wash.

You can see this method of replacing the pump in the following video tutorial:

Pump replacement with front wall removal

Washing machine without front wallTo replace the drain pump on some machines, we need to remove the front of the housing. Typically, this replacement method is suitable for household appliances from the following manufacturers: AEG, Bosch, Siemens.

Most of the models from Germany are designed in such a way that removing the front wall of the casing is the best option to get to the drain pump. The most popular pump model is Askoll. By the way, they are usually quite expensive.

How to remove the front of the washing machine (AEG, Bosch, Siemens)?

  1. First, we remove the housing cover. To do this, you need to unscrew the screws. They are usually located on the back of the washing machine. Then the cover must be pushed away from you, being on the front side of the machine. That is, from the side where the hatch. From such a push, the hatch is separated from the fixing grooves and it can be easily removed.
  2. After that, we need to remove the front panel. To do this, completely remove the dispenser. Then unscrew the front panel. Disconnect this part of the need from the wires. Just gently place it on top of the washing machine.
  3. Next, open the panel, behind which there is a drain pump at the bottom of the machine. And then unscrew the filter. When we unscrew it, some water will pour out. Therefore, we need to put a rag, and preferably a container for holding water.
  4. Now we need to unscrew the screws that secure the front wall from the bottom. Usually there are two.
  5. Then we need to remove the clamp, which fixes the cuff of the hatch. To do this, open the door of the machine, find the clamp, gently loosen and remove it.
  6. Unscrew the remaining screws and carefully remove the front wall of the housing. We do it slowly. And as soon as there is a sufficient clearance, we launch the hand there and disconnect the wires from the hatch lock. After that, nothing is holding back the wall and it can be removed.

So we got to the pump. After that we need to remove it. To do this, unscrew the retaining bolts and open the latches (if any), loosen and remove the locking clamps.

We also recommend photographing the position of the pump and how to fix it. This will help you with the assembly.

After separating the pump, you will need to replace it with a new one and assemble the machine in the reverse order.

Replacing the drain pump with the rear wall removed

Washing machine without back wallThis pump change option is suitable for the following models: Zanussi and Electrolux. The design features of Zanussi and Electrolux do not allow the replacement of this part through the two previous options, as they do not have a removable bottom and a detachable front of the case. Therefore, all work will be done through the back of the washing machine.

Before you begin to disassemble the machine, you must pour all the water out of it. To do this, put the drain hose on the floor. Under water, you can put a low capacity or remove the puddle that has appeared with a rag. Next, unscrew the screws that secure the upper part of the housing. Next, remove the cover. To do this, we need to push it back. After that, we also unscrew the fixing self-tapping screws from the back of the housing and from the sides, and the self-tapping screws fixing the intake valve casing. When all the fasteners are removed we can remove the back of the machine body.

  1. Remove the wires that are connected to the pump.
  2. Then we remove the entire snail as a whole (along with the pump and nozzles). To do this, open the latches.
  3. We turn off the screws and open the latches that fix the pump.
  4. We take a photo of the location of the pump. This will help us in the assembly.
  5. We remove the old pump, clean its place from possible debris and install a new one.
  6. Then we assemble the machine in the reverse order and conduct a test wash.

Have a good replacement!
