Washer hatch lock - how to replace a door lock?

Washing machine lockNowadays, there is no automatic washing machine in which there would be no door lock. This device is necessary in order to protect the user and not allow him to open the hatch when the washing program is running. The closed hatch door is automatically locked in the locked position using the UBL.

This happens when you have set the required mode, closed the door and pressed the button to start washing. Just before the gulf of water begins. And lasts until the entire washing program is completed. And sometimes a couple of minutes longer. A closed hatch door presses the cuff of the washing machine's tank and ensures tightness.

For washing machines, both mechanical-type locking devices and more modern UBL equipped with a temperature sensor are used.

UBL with temperature sensor

When power is supplied, the UBL locks the sunroof in the locked position. It closes the contacts of the switching device and signals that the washing can be started. A special lever by mechanical means fixes the lock. This lasts the entire washing time.

And at that moment when the electricity ceases to be supplied to the blocking device, you need to wait about 2-3 minutes. Then the latch is removed and allows you to open the door.

How does the lock device work?

Washer hatch lockA resistor is involved in the operation of the UBL. Its resistance increases as its heating increases. This effect leads to the fact that two plates, which are located in the lock, change their shape. This produces a shift of the lever. The lever closes the contacts of the switching device.

At the same time, a latch connected to the contact plate makes a movement that fixes the hatch door. The whole process takes place a few seconds after the electricity is supplied. When the power supply is cut off, the temperature sensor cools. Cooling takes 1 to 3 minutes. After which the plates take their normal form. The contact is no longer closed and locking stops.

Why does the lock device break?

  • Firstly, the plates can simply wear out over time.
  • Secondly, they can be destroyed if voltage fluctuations occur during the operation of the machine.

If the UBL breaks, then this is usually due to the fact that the plates do not take a normal shape and remain in a curved position. If the hatch of the washing machine remains locked in the locked position for more than 3-4 minutes, then a malfunction of the locking device is quite possible. If your UBL does not allow to open the machine after washing, then you simply have no choice. You just need to replace the device.

It is somewhat more difficult to unequivocally state that it was the UBL that failed at those moments when it does not fix the hatch in the closed position after you set the program and clicked on the start of the wash. Until the lock bar the door, washing will not start.

In this situation, there are several options for malfunctions. We discuss the two most common of them:

  1. The first is a breakdown of the lock of the washing machine itself or its wiring.
  2. The second is a breakdown of the electronics module.

If you remove UBL from the typewriter, then it’s not easy to check its performance. To do this, you need to connect power to it in a certain way. And if after 5 seconds you hear a click, then the UBL is functioning normally.

In principle, UBL is not quite expensive. And you can buy it if you suspect a breakdown. It is sold in specialized stores or in organizations involved in the repair of large household appliances.

Replacing the door lock yourself

To replace UBL independently, we need to open the hatch. If you are unlucky and it has fixed in a closed position, then you need to do the following:

  1. Remove the upper part of the housing (cover).
  2. After that, reject the machine so that it remains on two legs and the upper back of the case rests against the wall. This will tilt the center of gravity back. And the tank will slightly move away from the front.
  3. Then you need to stick your hand on top and get to UBL.
  4. Now you just have to feel for the locking element and push it to the side.
  5. Everything! The hatch can be opened.

And now we turn specifically to replacing the lock. The hatch is open. What's next?

Replacing the lock on the hatch of the washing machine

  • At the moment, we need to remove the cuff from the front wall. To do this, loosen the clamp, which supports it in this position. Clamps are different. In order to remove one of them, we need round-nose pliers. For others, you can use a screwdriver or pliers.
  • Now we need to remove the cuff from the front wall so that we can get to the locking device.
  • Then we unscrew the two screws that are on the outside. Where the lock hook enters the UBL. They then hold the lock in the required position.
  • Everything. The lock is no longer locked. And it can be reached through the hole between the cuff and the body.
  • Then disconnect the wires from the inoperative UBL. And connect a new working lock.
  • Return the UBL to its position, fix it with 2 screws.
  • Put on a cuff and fasten a collar.
  • Replace the cover. That's all! It remains only to conduct a test wash.

And for those who prefer not to read but watch, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the video on self-replacement of UBL. It will also show how to remove and disassemble the hatch to replace the handle. We look!

Thank! Informative, affordable. Maybe I’ve looked badly, but I didn’t find more such information as you have on any site. Well done!

There is no explanation how to get and remove UBL for example from the “vertical line” Elecrolux EWT 136641? There, after removing the control panel and side walls, I encountered a situation: the top cover of the machine serves as a support for the front wall behind which the UBL. And the wall itself is connected by the springs of the hanging tank. There’s a dead end.
