Does cotton shrink after washing? How to wash correctly!

How to wash cotton?Cotton. Products made of this natural material are very popular in the warm season. Pleasant for the body, they allow good air permeability, do not soar. At the same time, with a sharp change in temperature (in the event of an unexpected cooling), this material by itself very well warms up.

For all its merits, cotton has some drawbacks. For example, cotton often wrinkles, has a tendency to shrink, and white things turn yellow in the light. And, it should be noted, not every housewife, having learned that this or that dress is made of natural cotton, agrees to buy it. Some people think that it’s very difficult to take care of such things, because you can really suffer a lot: just a little - crumple at once, wash - sit down.

It is especially offensive when, for example, a custom-made sundress made of thin cotton after washing is significantly reduced in size. So much so that dressing him, not just bending over, crouching is scary. As a result, a beautiful thing is passed or thrown away or given to a more petite girlfriend. And all because when washing did something wrong ...

In principle, washing cotton is not so difficult. If everything is done as it should, cotton products may sit down, but slightly, within acceptable limits. But if you act incorrectly (see - wash), things made of cotton, indeed, are quite capable of significantly decreasing in size. In order for things not to go bad forever, experts recommend adhering to certain rules.

Laundry Prep

Preparing cotton for washingBefore washing, turn off and fasten the cotton product (naturally, if there are buttons or a lock).

If the item is heavily contaminated, it is advisable to soak it for twenty-four hours (because products made of thin cotton at a temperature exceeding forty degrees are categorically not recommended to be washed).

Some housewives in this situation prefer to act in the old way. For example, prepare a special solution. Four tablespoons of washing powder and the same amount of turpentine are dissolved in ten liters of warm water. Or (if there is no way to soak for a day) for twenty minutes put the linen in warm water (ten liters) with one tablespoon of ammonia and a couple of tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide. After that, it is usually quite enough just to rinse the clothes in warm water. After such a wash, there will be no shrinkage!

However, it should be noted that this method of soaking is a bit risky - the product can easily be discolored. Therefore, it is first desirable to check the effect of such solutions on this tissue.

If anyone does not want to take risks, it’s possible to act much easier - before washing, soak clothes in a powder designed just to eliminate strong pollution (fortunately, in the store these days it is much easier to get them than the same turpentine).

As for clothes made of thin cotton fabric, the best thing is powder containing enzymes - special bioadditives to the powder, which are responsible for removing dirt and stains. True, they cannot be soaked for a long time. May have problems.

Hand wash cotton

If you have to hand wash, in warm water you need to dissolve the washing powder (ideally, designed for products made from natural fabrics). It is desirable that the thing spent in the water no more than a quarter of an hour, and old linen - even less. Otherwise, strong shrinkage is ensured.

After this, the clothes must be washed and rinsed in clean running water. Squeeze the product (not too much, otherwise I remember very much) and hang to dry.

How to wash cotton in a washing machine

Washing cotton in the washing machineTo wash cotton products in a washing machine, you must first select the recommended washing mode. For example, white items made of thick cotton can be washed at ninety degrees. Matter will become clean and will not shrink.
If you need to wash a thin fabric, the temperature should be a maximum of forty degrees (although, if necessary, colored linen is able to withstand sixty).

The main thing is that the mode set by the typewriter is intended for washing cotton products. Otherwise, the question: “Does cotton sit after washing?” Will become extremely relevant.

How to “plant” a product?

In principle, there are all kinds of situations in life. For example, it may be necessary to reduce a product. So, as a result of drastic weight loss, you can suddenly find that there is a need to buy new, more seated things. In addition, it is time to sort out your wardrobe. And suddenly it turns out that throwing your favorite clothes just for the reason that it has become too big doesn't make you feel like it.

Knowledgeable people here advise not to rush. Especially when it comes to cotton clothes and at home there is an ordinary washing machine, also with drying.

After all, cotton products to “plant” is not a problem. Therefore, you can safely load a cotton dress into a typewriter. Set the temperature to sixty degrees. The only thing, it is advisable to add a little washing powder, which helps maintain color (so that the product does not fade). And go! After washing, apply the normal spin cycle, and then, if possible, turn on machine drying. The higher the temperature, the more it will sit. The only thing is not known how much. But most likely, the dress will be just right!
