How to connect a dishwasher to the water supply and sewerage

dishwasher connectionHaving bought the long-awaited dishwasher, you are wondering whether to call the wizard for installation or connect it to the communications yourself, saving a couple of thousand rubles on this. In general, if you have a set of tools and skills to work with them, then connecting a dishwasher should not cause much difficulty. In addition, armed with detailed instructions, it will be even easier to handle.

Preparation for installation

The connection of the dishwasher to the water supply should begin with an inspection of the still-packed equipment. Already at this stage it is possible to understand whether the machine was packed correctly and whether it was damaged during transportation. It is enough to shake the box and listen - there should be no sounds and knocks, otherwise, something has broken in it, which means that such a machine should not even be accepted.

Making sure by indirect signs that the dishwasher is in order, you need to unpack the box and bring the unit into the kitchen. Next, check for the drain and inlet hose, which should be supplied with the machine. Make sure that their length is sufficient to connect and install the dishwasher in the place where you planned. It is important that the hoses are not tight, but not too long.

Note! Usually the original hoses are 1.5 m long, which in most cases is enough to connect the dishwasher near the sink to hot and cold water, as well as to the sewer.

Think about what tools you might need, it will all depend on which pipes are installed for hot and cold water supply (metal or metal-plastic). Screwdrivers, pliers, an adjustable wrench may come in handy.

Of the components you may need:

  • siphon with two outputs, if a washing machine is connected with a dishwasher;
  • if you have standard pipes, then a ¾ inch tee (or maybe two tees, if you also need to connect to hot water, with non-standard pipes you need to take a tee with a transition diameter);
  • ¾ inch diameter tap
  • filter for water treatment (not necessary, but with it the dishwasher can last longer);
  • winding tape;
  • if necessary, extension hoses, clamps and connecting adapters may be required, and how to extend the hoses can be found in the article Replacing the drain and inlet hose.

Important! Before connecting the dishwasher to the sewer and water supply, you need to read the instructions that came with the technique, find out what water the inlet hose connects to, cold or hot.

In general, the use of hot water is not recommended, since its quality is much worse than cold water, because it contains a lot of mechanical impurities, and this can adversely affect the operation of the machine.

Water supply connection

Having prepared everything you need, place the dishwasher closer to the place where it will constantly stand. It is necessary to put so that the length of the hoses is enough to divert the water supply and sewage. At the same time, it should be convenient for you to work when connecting hoses.

The inlet hose connects to the machine quite simply. The nut with fitting is screwed onto the outlet for the inlet hose located at the back or bottom of the dishwasher, depending on the model. The other end must be connected to cold or hot water. How to do it? One of two ways:

  • connect through a mixer;
  • crash into a pipe of hot or cold water.

In our opinion, it is more reasonable to connect the dishwasher directly to hot and cold water than through a mixer, this method is more reliable. The first method is more universal, as they do in most cases.

dishwasher connectionWe describe both connection options. So, turn off the water supply to the apartment and get to work:

  1. unscrew the cold water hose going to the mixer from the hot or cold water pipe (depending on what you are connecting to);
  2. mount a tee into the water supply pipe;
  3. screw the hose from the mixer to one part of the tee, and the tap to the other;
  4. if necessary and your desire, connect a deep water filter to the tap;
  5. connect the inlet hose of the machine to the filter; if there is no filter, screw the hose to the tap.

Important! FUM tape must be wound onto all threaded connections.

dishwasher connectionIn the case when the HVS pipe passes near the dishwasher, you can not pull the inlet hose to the connection to the mixer, but crash into the pipe. To do this, turn off the water, and then:

  • using a grinder and other special tools, you need to cut the pipe under the squeeze sleeve;
  • then mount the coupling,
  • connect a ball valve to the coupling;
  • screw the inlet hose of the dishwasher onto the tap.

If it is necessary to connect several devices to one water supply pipe, two tees will be requiredwhich can be connected as follows.

connecting a dishwasher and washing machine

When there is no water supply in the house, for example, in the country house, it is still possible to ensure the connection of the dishwasher to water, although this is inconvenient. To do this, you will need a tank with a capacity of 20-30 liters of water, which must be put in the attic (to a height of 2-3 m) to create a water pressure of at least 0.1 MPa. A pipe insert is made at the bottom of the tank, and the dishwasher inlet hose is connected to the pipe.

Connection to the sewerage

Some naively believe that connecting a dishwasher to the sewer is the simplest thing. What is there, I stuck the drain hose into a siphon or into a sewer pipe, and the end of the matter, it's not like connecting a dishwasher to hot or cold water. This statement is extremely naive. Connecting to the sewage system may indeed seem more simple than connecting to hot water, but it also has nuances that cannot be ignored.

  • The hose should not be too long. If its length exceeds 1.5-2 meters, this will lead to the fact that the drain pump and half of its life will not work, since the load on it will be prohibitive.
  • The hose connected to the sewer must have the correct bend and slope. If this is not done, then due to the siphon effect (return of water from the sewer back to the tanks of the machine), the dishwasher will quickly fail.
  • If the hose is inserted directly into the sewer pipe, then you cannot leave a gap between its walls and the walls of the pipe. Otherwise, the dishwasher pump will begin to pump out water under pressure, and the water will splash out of the pipe onto the floor, forming a large puddle on the floor.

So, to connect the dishwasher to the sewer, you need to do a couple of actions, depending on the chosen method. If the waste water will be discharged into the sewer through a siphon outlet, the scheme is as follows:

  1. We move the dishwasher a little to make it convenient to work.
  2. We take the end of the drain hose, put it on the outlet of the siphon, which is located exactly under the sink, and draw it with a hose clamp.
  3. We bend the hose with the knee up at the siphon itself, and then bend down at the base of the dishwasher. That's all!

connecting the dishwasher to the drain

If you decide not to fool around with a siphon or if you already have a siphon without bends, and you are reluctant to change it, you can stick the end of the drain hose directly into the pipe. The scheme is as follows.

  • We extend the dishwasher so that there is access to communications.
  • We insert the end of the drain hose into the drain of the sewer pipe, and then wrap the joint with electrical tape. Not very aesthetically pleasing, but cheap, reliable and practical.
  • We bend the hose in the same way as we described above - the work is finished.

In addition, perhaps you need to organize the draining of two dishwasher and washing machines at once, then the siphon connected to the sink should have two taps. Something like this would look like this:

connecting the dishwasher and washing machine to the drain

After connecting the plumbing and sewage, be sure to check the dishwasher. To do this, turn on the washing mode and listen to the operation of the machine. There should be no extraneous sounds. In addition, inspect all water and drain connections for leaks.

In conclusion, we note that in general, connecting the dishwasher to the water supply and sewage system is not so difficult. But, like in any work, there are nuances here that you should definitely pay attention to. Otherwise, everything may end, either with the failure of the dishwasher, or flooding. It is better to avoid both of them - do it right!
