Error E18 in a Siemens washing machine

If the Siemens machine has a display on the control panel, then the process of diagnosing the problem that has arisen will be easier: the system will automatically display a special code on the screen. Knowing its decoding, you can narrow down the search for the malfunction that has occurred and begin repairs faster. Thus, error E18 in a washing machine indicates problems with the drain. We will tell you more specifically about possible sources of breakdown in our article.

Meaning of the specified code

The Siemens machine fault codes provided by the system are standard for all manufactured models, which simplifies their decoding. Let us repeat that E18 signals a problem in the drain system. We are talking about the following “sore points”:

• clogged garbage filter;
• faulty pump;
• contamination of drainage channels, hoses or pipes;
• faulty pressure switch;
• defective control module.

Often the causes of failure are broken small parts, loose contacts or loose fixation of individual elements. All these are the consequences of improper operation of the machine with coins forgotten in pockets, torn buttons, wool and hair stuck to clothes. From the drum, foreign objects enter the tank, filter and hoses, impeding the circulation of water and the rotation of the pump impeller.

Most of the listed sources of error E18 can be replaced, adjusted and repaired without the involvement of service personnel. If you want to deal with the problem without outsiders, we start diagnosing it ourselves.

Where to start checking?

The very first thing on the list of what to do in case of error E18 is to prepare the machine for diagnostics.We stop the washing with the “Stop” button, disconnect the machine from the power supply and turn off the water supply tap. Next, disconnect the drain hose and pour out the remaining liquid. Then we move the unit away from the wall or take it out of the closet and begin a sequential check of all possible sources of failure. We proceed in this order.

1. Checking the pump filter. We wait 15-20 minutes until the water heated during washing cools down, and pay attention to the base cover in the lower right corner of the case. We find a small drain hose, pull it towards ourselves and unscrew the plug. When the accumulated liquid has drained, remove the cover from the filter and clean it.
2. We carefully inspect the filter housing for signs of damage: darkening, traces of burning or rust. Next, we examine the integrity of the existing pipes and pump impeller.
3. We blow out the drain hose, checking for blockages.

If there is heavy dirt, hairballs, scale or other foreign objects, all parts must be thoroughly cleaned. It is recommended to test the hoses and pipes, and then tighten all terminals and clamps. If there is damage on the face, we change the pump.

Upon completion of all manipulations, restore all connections, not forgetting about reliable fixation and tightness.

Let's check the level sensor

Often, to solve the E18 problem, it is necessary to repair the breakdown of the pressure switch. Doing this yourself is not difficult. The main thing is not to forget about safety precautions and disconnect the machine from all communications. Then we begin checking the functionality of the water level sensor:

• Unscrew the two upper screws on the rear wall of the case;
• move the top cover, gently tapping it away from you;
• we find a tube with a diameter equal to the pressure switch fitting;
• loosen the clamp on the pressure hose and disconnect it;
• insert the tube into it and slowly inhale air into it;
• We listen: if there were 1-2 clicks, it means the contacts worked.

We finish testing with a visual inspection. We probe the tubules for blockages, and examine the device itself for integrity. If clogged, wash the holes with a stream of water, and if damaged, change the pressure switch.

There is another, more reliable way to check the water level sensor - ring it with a multimeter. We set up the device in resistance measurement mode, attach the probes to the contacts and evaluate the result on the display. Fluctuating numbers indicate that the pressure switch is fully functioning, and the absence of changes indicates its malfunction. The situation cannot be corrected by repair - a complete replacement is necessary.

If both the pumping system and the pressure switch pass the test, then the problem is in the control module. It is strongly not recommended to do DIY repairs with the electronics of the washing machine: there is a high risk of aggravating the situation. It is better to stop the diagnosis and contact a service center.
