The dishwasher does not drain water - what should I do?

Dishwasher doesn't drain waterOne day, without any warning, your dishwasher stops without finishing washing the dishes. There is water inside and does not go away, and instead of the sounds of a running pump and the gurgling of water, you hear a strange buzzing and clicking sound.

What to do? Let's try to figure it out and find the reason why the dishwasher drain does not work.

Causes of malfunction

All reasons that may be associated with drainage can be divided into two groups. The first group is associated with all kinds of blockages, and the second suggests a breakdown (malfunction) of some dishwasher unit. We list all the reasons for such a malfunction:

  • The drain hose is kinked in some place, so the water does not physically leave the machine. It is enough to straighten it and try to turn on the machine again. Such a trivial problem rarely happens.
  • the coarse filter is clogged. Do not neglect the simple rule - before loading, clean the dishes from food residues. Bones, napkins and other debris clog the filter holes, and water will not be able to leave the tank.
  • clogged drain areas. Food that has passed through the filter can create a blockage in any part of the drain system, for example, in the pipes, drain hose or pump.
  • the pump burned out;
  • the pressure switch is faulty;
  • The software module is broken.

In Bosch dishwashers from the SRV, SRS or SKF series, in some models the drain problem is detected only after the end of the program. In the middle of the cycle, the machine does not drain the water, but continues to wash dishes only in waste water. But when you open the door, you will see that there is water left in the tank. Some machine models may stop in the middle of the program and the word “END” and an indicator in the form of a drawn faucet, which indicates an error in the program process.

In Bosch dishwashers from the SMV, SPS or SKS series, if there is a display, the fault code E24, informing about a problem with the drain. If there is no display in the dishwasher, the lights will light up and a beep will sound and the machine will stop working.

For your information! Error TO03 will appear on Ariston dishwashers, on Electrolux I20 machines, on Kandy E2 machines.

Remove the blockage and replace the pump

dishwasher filterSo, the dishwasher won't drain, what should I do? Disconnect it from the power supply. Next, inspect the machine for blockages; it is best to start with the drain hose. Disconnect it from the sewer and lower it into a bucket; if water comes out, then the siphon or sewer is clogged. If the water does not flow, look for a clog in the dishwasher itself. First clean the filters, here's what you need to do:

  1. open the machine door and remove the dish baskets;
  2. unscrew the filter cap located at the bottom of the tank of the machine and pull out the filter glass;
  3. then pull out the mesh;
  4. rinse the “glass” and the mesh under running water, using a toothbrush and dishwashing detergent if necessary;
  5. Next, unscrew the lid of the drain pump and carefully check with your finger how the impeller rotates; perhaps debris has also gotten into it, be careful, as not only fruit seeds, but also small fragments from dishes can get there;drain pump

    For your information! In Bosch dishwashers on the srv or sgv models, the pump cover is held in place by one self-tapping screw; in Bosch models of the smv or spv series, the cover snaps on, and it is not always possible to open it.

  6. close the pump.
  7. return the filter to its place.

If, after starting the dishwasher, the water still stands, it means that you need to look for the cause in the internal parts and, above all, in the pump. We'll describe how to get there.

  1. You will first need to drain the dishwasher by manually scooping it out of the tank or tilting it forward to let the water drain out.
  2. Pull out the drain filter again.
  3. Then we turn the car over on its back and remove the tray, which is attached with self-tapping screws.

    Important! When removing the tray, be careful; in Bosch machines, the Aqua-stop sensor may be attached to it, so do not pull it so as not to break the wires.

  4. Disconnect the sensor and move the pan to the side.
  5. Now unscrew the pump and remove the hoses from it.
    drain pump
  6. Next, we check the impeller, which should rotate intermittently. If there is no rotation, then it is better to replace the unit.
  7. Then check the resistance by connecting the multimeter leads to the pump contacts. Normally, the resistance should be about 200 ohms. Check if voltage is coming to the pump from the control board.
  8. If the pump is faulty, then it is best to buy an original spare part for Bosch or Ariston and replace it with the broken one.

Checking the pressure switch and software module

pressure switch for dishwasherWhen there is water in the pan and does not go away, the water level sensor may be the reason. If there is a defect in the pressure tank or in the tube connected to the pressure switch, the reading of the amount of water in the dishwasher will be distorted. And if the water pan is full, the sensor may not send a signal to the control module, as a result the pump will not work, and water will remain in the tank. In this situation it is necessary Replacing the pressure switch in a dishwasher.

As you can see, the control module is involved in the water draining chain. Therefore, if it fails, the water will not drain. This could be a short circuit, wear on the device, or a firmware error. In general, the software module is the most complex part in the machine and the most expensive. And it is better to entrust the work of replacing it to a specialist; it may even be possible to repair the part.

So, having eliminated the reason that there is water in the dishwasher tank, you need to run a test wash and check whether the machine is working and whether the water is draining. We hope that the article was informative and thanks to the enthusiasts who post videos on how to repair a Bosch, Ariston, Indesit or any other dishwasher with their own hands.

    There is no water in the pan, the drain pump works to drain, the faucet and error E15 are on the display. What could be the problem?

      Check the mic from the float, maybe the contacts are stuck or completely jammed.

      Water in the pan! Tighten the bolts on top of the metal mesh!

    We can’t open this cover under which the pump is, and there’s nothing for a screwdriver.

  3. Gravatar Andrey Andrey:

    The water did not go away. I removed the filter and there were no blockages. I turned the impeller. Everything is fine. I thought the end of the engine had come. I disassembled the machine, removed the motor and saw that thin fibers of threads and hair had been wound onto the shaft between the impeller and the body. Cleaned it up and put everything back together. Works.

    Doesn't drain water. There are no blockages. I removed the pump and connected it to 220, it buzzes, but does not turn. I bent some kind of crap like a sensor, the motor started working.I put it back and it doesn’t drain again. What else can you watch?

    Bosch machine does not drain water. The motor starts, for a couple of seconds and stops. But this is not enough - the water still remains. And so he tries three times, after which he freezes and turns on the faucet - an error. If you reboot a couple of times, then you can completely drain the water. I checked the hose - the water flows out well. What is the problem?

      Same problem. How did you decide? Replacing the pump?

  6. Gravatar Olga Olga:

    Thank you, the video helped. I took off the pump cover, cleaned it, and wiped it down. It worked. True, before that I cleaned all the drain hoses, the elbow to which the machine is connected. Now everything is fine and everything is clean.

  7. Gravatar Vladimir Vladimir:

    Thanks for the excellent detailed instructions. Fixed the car in 2 minutes.

    Machine Bosch sks40e. At the end of the program it does not drain the water. If you turn it off and start it again, press reset and hold - water soldiers. The engine turns out to be working. What is the reason, tell me? Hoses, drain - everything is clean. The filter mesh and motor are clean.
