Bosch washing machine does not drain water

SM Bosch won't drain waterIf your washing machine won't drain, it may not be a trivial problem. You will have to check a lot of things before you can discover the true cause of the malfunction, localize it, and then eliminate it. In this publication, we will tell you how to determine approximately where to look for the problem based on the external signs of a breakdown, we will tell you which parts will have to be removed and how to check them without resorting to the help of a technician. We hope it will be interesting.

It's all about the blockage

As soon as you discover that your Bosch Maxx 5 or any other washing machine is giving a water drain error, you need to restart the equipment and see at what stage this error appears. Here you need not so much to look as to listen. If the pump works, the drain occurs, but it is done too slowly, the error appears due to the fact that the system cannot remove dirty water from the tank in 10 minutes. In this case, there is a whole list of reasons:

  • blockage in the pipe between the pump and the tank;
  • blockage in the sewer;
  • blockage in the siphon;
  • clog in the garbage filter;
  • the pump is clogged.

In slightly more rare cases, the machine is unable to remove water in time due to a broken impeller. As a result of a manufacturing defect or for some other reason, the wings break and the pump, although it functions, cannot pump out water effectively. We will check everything. Let's start with a simple one, with a garbage filter.

If you don't know what a garbage filter is and have never cleaned it, it's probably causing the problem. There is a small hatch in the front lower right corner of the Bosch Maxx 4 or any other washing machine. You open the door, and behind it is a large black plug.Place a rag, or better yet, place a small basin and unscrew the cap.

Be careful! When you open the garbage filter cap, be prepared for dirty water to flow out.

washing machine filterInspect the internal cavity of the garbage filter and the plug itself. Remove dirt, strands of hair, hair clips, coins, etc. Wipe the inside with a cloth and screw the plug into place until the end. If the problem is not solved, you need to climb further. Check how quickly dirty water goes down the drain. Open the tap fully and take a look. If the water does not drain well, there may be a blockage in the siphon or drain. By clearing the clog, you will solve the problem with the machine.

If the drain does not work, the cause may be a clogged drain hose that runs from the washing machine body to the siphon fitting. You need to carefully remove the hose from the fitting and check it for blockages. A clogged hose is cleaned with a wire or pierced with hot water.

At the next stage, we begin to look for a breakdown in the depths of the washing machine. From the front, you need to unscrew and remove the narrow front panel, which is located just under the front part of the washing machine body. We check the pipes, find a blockage or foreign object in the pump and remove it. After that, of course, we assemble the machine. If partial Bosch washing machine disassembly causes you difficulties, read the article of the same name, previously posted on our website, and we move on.

The pump has failed

pump in the washing machineA broken drain pump shows similar symptoms. It may hum, but not drain water or not hum at all, then localizing the problem turns out to be quite simple. We get to the pump and check its coil with a multimeter. If the unit does not ring, you can safely replace it with a new one.If it rings but does not work normally, you can disassemble it and look at the causes of the malfunction, but it is better not to bother and replace it.

Buy only original spare parts. It’s better to overpay a little for a branded Bosch pump than to repeat the repair a few months later and risk buying Chinese spare parts. They may last for a while, but most likely you will be throwing money away.

Firmware problem

It happens that the Bosch machine does not squeeze out or drain dirty water, although there seem to be no blockages, and the pump is functioning normally. What then is the “dog buried in”? Often, Russian-assembled Bosch washing machines experience errors in the firmware of the electronic module. Such errors can manifest themselves in different ways, for example, blocking the operation of the drain pump.

We would categorically not recommend you to reflash the control module yourself. This will only make the problem worse.

What to do in such a situation? Of course, you need to entrust this matter to a professional. The technician will test the electronics, reset the firmware and restore the system to functionality. Typically the event takes from 20 to 40 minutes. In particularly serious cases, the firmware needs to be updated, but don’t worry, it won’t take much longer. Replacing the control module in such a situation will not be necessary, so you will get by with “little loss.”

So, in most cases, the problem with poor drainage is solved on its own. You just need to look very carefully at how the washing machine behaves, localize the problem, and then fix it. You don't have to take anything apart in particular. All problematic elements can be reached relatively easily.Difficulties may arise with the firmware, but this problem is very difficult to solve on your own. It's better to contact a specialist!

    Thank you, I used the advice and fixed the problem myself!

    After replacing the heating element, the machine does not pump out water well. Where to look for a problem?
