Drum won't spin in Samsung washing machine

The drum does not spin in a Samsung machineIf a Samsung washing machine does not spin the drum, this does not mean that it is broken. The options may be different, but the difficulty is that you will have to analyze all these possible options, determine the most probable ones, and only then purposefully get into the car to carry out repairs. In this publication, we tried to describe all possible causes of breakdowns that lead to a situation where the drum stops spinning. We hope you find this information useful!

What could have happened?

If your Samsung machine suddenly stops turning the drum overnight, there is no need to panic. First of all, turn off the “home assistant” so as not to aggravate the situation, and then start inspecting the “rebellious” equipment. Even before turning off the washing machine, you need to look at its display and make sure there are no symbols on it. Perhaps the washing machine itself tells you what happened to it.

If there is nothing like that, then you need to open the hatch, take out most of the things and start the washer again. In general, all breakdowns that lead to the fact that a Samsung washing machine stops spinning the drum can be divided into two groups: simple household ones and complex technical ones. Household causes often arise through the fault of the user, but cannot always be eliminated by the user himself.

  • Clogged drain hose or pipe.drum doesn't spin
  • A solid foreign object has entered the tank.
  • Overload of laundry.

The list of complex technical breakdowns is longer, but these breakdowns are mostly not critical, and in some cases you can fix them yourself without resorting to the help of a professional, but you still need to first listen to a specialist’s opinion on this matter. These are the reasons.

  1. The drive belt is stretched and weakened.
  2. The drive belt has come off.
  3. The belt broke.
  4. The carbon brushes of the commutator motor have worn out.
  5. The engine fins are worn out.
  6. The motor winding was broken.
  7. The engine coil burned out.

Important! If your model of Samsung washing machine has an inverter motor, then faults associated with brushes, windings and lamellas can be discarded, as well as faults with the belt, since this technique does not have a drive belt.

Household reasons

Modern washing machines are very sensitive to various types of faults, even minor ones. There are many sensors inside such equipment that, at the slightest deviation from the norm, can stop the rotation of the “home assistant” drum. If the Samsung washing machine display does not show anything and the drum does not spin, you need to do the following.

  • We take out most of the laundry from the drum of the Samsung washing machine and restart the washing program. Perhaps you simply overloaded the washer with things. If the drum is still standing still, move on to the next action.
  • We turn off the power to the Samsung washing machine and try to open the hatch. If the hatch does not open, look inside. If you see water inside, 95% of the problem is a blockage.

In about 5% of cases, the problem may lie in a faulty pressure switch, but if the pressure switch is faulty, then most often the drum rotates at least slowly.

  • foreign object in the tankIf the drum of the machine does not turn even before the water is filled and, accordingly, the washing program stops, while the hatch can be opened, perhaps the reason is a foreign object that has entered the tank. To check whether the drum is jammed or not, just twist it by hand and everything will immediately become clear.

If you encounter a clogged drain system, the first thing you need to do is drain the water from the tank. This can be done through the garbage filter, which is located in the lower right corner of the case on a Samsung washing machine. Lay down as many rags as possible so that water does not flood everything around, and slowly unscrew the filter.

Once you have managed to drain the tank, do the following:

  1. Unscrew the garbage filter completely and remove all dirt and foreign objects from the hole;
  2. if this does not solve the problem, then disconnect the washing machine from the communications and lower it to its left side;
  3. Next, we will be interested in the part of the Samsung washing machine, which we circled in red in the figure below - this is the pump and drain pipe. We need to unscrew and disconnect both in order to wash and clean these parts;

  4. Right below we have the opportunity to disconnect the drain hose from the drain pump in order to again clear it of blockages. After this procedure, the machine should work as usual.

If a foreign object gets into the washing machine tank and the drum jams, causing it to not spin, then consider yourself lucky. Things could have been much worse.

Due to an oversight of users, many small and even not very small objects end up in the tanks of washing machines, which can simply lie at the bottom of the tank without disturbing anyone. But it could be different. Hit a large iron or metal button into the tank bra wire, which is larger in size than the space between the wall of the tank and the wall of the drum, and this is where the problems begin.

A foreign object simply jams the drum, preventing it from rotating, and in the worst case (if it is a sharp bra bone), such an object damages the wall of the tank. The tank begins to leak and all this ultimately results in expensive and time-consuming repairs.

If we notice that the drum is jammed and we suspect that it is not spinning precisely because of a foreign object, we must immediately stop all attempts to rotate the drum or turn on the washing machine. Next, you need to lower the washing machine on its left side, remove the drain pipe from the tank of the washing machine and through the hole in the drain pipe, which, by the way, is quite large, try to pull out the foreign object from the tank with your fingers.

In most cases, it is possible to pull out a foreign object through the hole in the drain pipe; if not, you will have to remove the front panel, pull out the heating element (heating element) and through the large hole formed, pull out the excess from the tank.

It's all in the belt

Older and modern Samsung washing machines with a belt drive and a commutator motor are a real punishment. Both the commutator motor itself and the belt are the weak points of the washing machine. And we know that usually “where it is weak, it breaks” and in our case this saying can be taken literally.replacing the drive belt

The first situation we will consider is a broken drive belt. A belt breaks either if it was tensioned too much at the factory, or if it has worn out over time. In both cases, the belt must be replaced. You need to buy or order an original spare part and start replacing.

There is nothing complicated here.We take a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the screws that are located on the back of the service hatch, remove the service hatch, remove the remains of the old drive belt from the housing and put the new belt on first the small engine pulley, then on the large drum pulley.

If, after opening the hatch, you find that the belt is not torn, check whether it has stretched; maybe that is why the drum does not spin. We grab the belt from one edge and swing it from side to side, and then try to rotate it. If slipping is evident, you need to remove the stretched belt and install a new one.

The belt may be intact, it just fell off the pulley. In this case, it is also better to replace it, since the drive belts don’t just fly off, either it is stretched or frayed. If everything is fine with the belt, but it still falls off, check the condition of the drum pulley.

Let's look at the engine

If the problem is neither the belt, nor a clog, nor a foreign object, then it may be the reason that the drum does not spin in the washing machine motor. You need to start checking the commutator motor with its brushes and coil. To do this we do the following.

replacing brushes in the washing machine motor

  • We place the washing machine on its side, preferably on the left.
  • We remove the engine through the bottom of the car by unscrewing several bolts and disconnecting the wiring.
  • Using an ohmmeter we measure the resistance of the coil. If the coil burns out, it needs to be replaced.
  • Unscrew the small screws and take out the brushes. If at least one brush is very worn out, then you need to change the pair at once.

If the coil and brushes are intact, then perhaps the reason that the Samsung washing machine drum does not spin lies in more serious engine malfunctions - damaged lamellas or a broken winding. To make sure that the motor is really not working, connect it separately and test it. About, how to connect the motor from a washing machine you can find out in the article of the same name.

Well, the engine is connected and does not work - the worst fears have been confirmed. Next you need to decide what to do. You can send the engine for lamella boring or rewinding, depending on the malfunction. All this is expensive and does not guarantee results, so unfortunately, it is wiser to buy a new engine and install it instead of the burned out old one.

In conclusion, we note that some experts claim that the drum does not spin at all when problems arise with the electronics of the washing machine. More specifically, due to malfunctions of the control module. We cannot agree with this statement, since in this case the rotation of the drum is maintained in test mode, that is, it stands for a minute, then makes one revolution and stands again.

In this case, it would be more correct to say that it does not rotate stably. In our article we looked at cases when the drum does not rotate at all, and we will talk about unstable drum rotation in a separate publication, because there are completely different breakdowns and their causes.

    With great hope for an answer. The drum rotates, but not for long, 5-7 revolutions, and then it creaks and the drum stops. Cleaned the drain. It turns by hand without squeaking.
    Thank you for the article

    Spins the drum for 5 minutes.
    Then exactly 10 miserable attempts to spin the reel and the program stops.
    However, there is nothing on the display.
    I’ll check the blockage, although it’s not during rinsing or spinning, but during the wash itself...
