In this article, we decided to talk about how you can make your own household emery out of the engine of a washing machine.

The emery device and its purpose

Emery is a useful thing in the household. It is very convenient for them to sharpen metal knives, scissors, drills, shovels and other tools. In stores you can buy a similar device, their choice is great. However, the price may force to refuse such an acquisition. Therefore, you can try to make emery with your own hands from the engine from an old washing machine.

To carry out such work, you need to have a good idea of ​​how emery is made, of which parts it consists. The simplest version of emery has:

  • engine;
  • sleeve;
  • flange;
  • starting device;
  • emery wheel;
  • protective cover;
  • electric cable and plug;
  • support.

Of all these details, you will need to purchase a quality emery wheel. All other details can be done with your own hands, this will be discussed further.

emery from the washing machine engineTo fit an emery wheel on the motor sleeve from the washing machine, a flange is required, since the shaft diameter usually does not coincide with the diameter of the stone. If there is no suitable factory flange in diameter, then we do it with our own hands. We take a piece of metal pipe whose diameter is such that the pipe is easily and firmly pressed onto the motor shaft; a pipe with a diameter of 32 mm is usually suitable. The length of the steel pipe should not exceed 150-200 mm, this will be enough to fix an emery circle on it.

So, at one end of the pipe using a tap we make a thread that is approximately twice as long as the circle thickness. After this, the second end of the pipe must be well heated, for example with a blowtorch and put on the shaft. You can fix the self-made flange by welding, if possible, or by a bolt, having drilled the flange and shaft through for this purpose.

Important! The thread on the flange must be opposite relative to the rotation of the motor shaft from the washing machine so that the emery disc does not fly off during rotation. If the thread is cut incorrectly, then on the induction motor will have to change the course of rotation of the shaft.

The transitional part from the engine to the emery wheel is ready, now we wind the nut on the thread, then the washer. After the washer we put on a grinding wheel, which we fix with the washer and nut. Tighten the nuts well, for strength, you can screw another lock nut at the end.

We connect the engine

For self-assembly of emery, the master recommends taking engines from Soviet-era washing machines such as Volga, Oka, or Vyatka. This is explained by the fact that the engines on them are powerful. In general, an engine with a power of about 200 W is enough for 1000-1500 rpm, although a 400 W engine at 3000 rpm can also be used to make a do-it-yourself emery. But at the same time, the emery stone must be very durable, otherwise it will collapse at such speeds.

A very important step in the manufacture of emery is the connection of the motor to the electrical network. This will require an electric wire and plug. The motor connection from the washing machine is automatic and the engine from the Soviet washing machine is slightly different. In the engine from an automatic machine of six wires, only 2 wires going to the motor brushes and 2 wires from the stator will be required. The remaining 2 wires are the tacho wires.

To find these wires, you need to take a multimeter. Measuring the resistance of the wires, we find the wires of the tachometer, their resistance is about 70 Ohms and we remove them to the side.The resistance of the remaining wires is determined in pairs. Now we connect one stator wire to the wire from the brushes, insulating the connection with electrical tape. The remaining two wires are connected to the electric wire with a plug at the end.

Important! No capacitor is required for such an engine; it will begin to rotate immediately after being plugged into the outlet.

To connect the engine from the Soviet washing machine, you need to determine from 4 wires which are working and which are starting:

  1. We take a multimeter and apply the probe to one wire, we apply the second probe alternately connection diagram of the engine through the starting deviceto the remaining wires, as soon as the pair is found, remove the wires to the side.
  2. Then we measure the resistance of the second pair of wires.
  3. We select a working winding, in this case - this is the pair of wires whose resistance turned out to be less.
  4. Now we connect the wires of the working winding directly to the electric wire with a plug. You can leave it that way, but then to start the engine, you need to spin the emery circle with your hand and it will begin to rotate. As a starting device, you can use the button to ring. How to connect it to the circuit with your own hands? It is necessary to connect one button wire to the working winding through the terminal, and the second to the starting one. The diagram on the right shows how to connect a homemade emery from the engine through a button, where SB is the button, OB is the working winding, and SW is the starting winding.

Note! The capacitor as a starting device should not be used, it will lead to the burning of the winding.

When working with an electrician with your own hands, be careful. On the motor housing from the washing machine there are mounts with holes. Just before, screw it on the surface of the table or stools lay a metal sheet, which also needs to be fixed.

For safety reasons, you can fix an arc of metal over the emery disk, which will protect against particles flying during operation. Besides, Be sure to wear safety glasses when working with emery.
