Is it possible to wash the filter from the hood in the dishwasher

hood filterThe forums are very hotly debated the question: wash filters from the hood in the dishwasher or not to wash? There are many supporters and opponents of this method of filter cleaning, today we will try to reconcile both of them. In fact, the question “is not worth a damn”. You will see this very quickly.

What is the essence of the problem?

Any grease filter of a standard kitchen hood is contaminated quickly enough, all the housewives know. Even if you do not have to cook very often, after a month or two the filter will be covered with a layer of fat, which is not so easy to remove. Grease settles on the hood filter layer by layer, gradually polymerizing and forming a hard layer, which can only be brushed off with a coarse metal brush, and even then not always.

Dishwashing detergents like Fairy cope with fresh fat, well, in extreme cases, dried up, but they can’t take the polymerized fat layer.

Some housewives force their husbands to arm themselves with an iron brush, and scrub the filter until it crumbles or her husband's hands fall off. In modern conditions, this is unacceptable, and therefore owners of hoods are looking for various detergents that can effectively dissolve and rinse off polymerized fat, but you will not find such products in the daytime. Since it is difficult to find a special tool, they find an alternative - they put the hood filter in the dishwasher and drive it there for 4-6 hours, but can this be done?

Material dependent

filter hoods before bathing in Fairy and lemon and afterfilter hoods before bathing in Fairy and lemon and afterThe hood filter elements are made of aluminum or, more precisely, of an aluminum-based metal alloy. On old units and on modern budget hoods are ordinary filters without a special coating. They can not be washed in a dishwasher, because they will turn black and eventually collapse. But filters with a special shiny coating can be washed in a dishwasher and this is often written in the product passport. If you don’t understand, why not wash aluminum in a dishwasher, read the publication of the same name and everything will become clear.

In general, before you put the filter of your hood into the dishwasher, you need to carefully inspect it. Well, in extreme cases, if you don’t understand metals, you can google it and find out more about the filter for specific hoods. There is such information on the web. Particularly desperate housewives check whether it is possible to wash the filter in the machine by experiment, but this method is fraught with losses, so we do not recommend it to you.

Even if you find out that you can wash the filter of your hood in the machine, rejoice early. Putting this part into the machine, you will be able to see this very soon. We conducted an experiment washing 6 hours in a dishwasher, in an extract filter in water at 60 degrees. There is little sense from such a procedure. The fat was washed only halfway, but then it was manually cleaned quite easily, so the “trick with the dishwasher” either fails at all, or fails once.

We clean without a dishwasher

What to do if the filter is aluminum and it cannot be washed in a car? You will have to turn on your head and figure out how to deal with polymerized fat without a dishwasher. Say right away, we will offer a method without exhausting manual labor with calluses.

  1. Take a large basin or other suitable container into which the filter will fit.
  2. Pour enough boiling water into the basin so that the filter in it drowned lying flat.
  3. Pour 50 g of citric acid, 6 tablespoons of liquid dishwashing liquid and 100 g of baking soda into the basin.

Dishwashing liquid should be well dissolved in water, the rest will dissolve itself.

  1. Rinse the hood filter and grease it with dishwashing liquid.how to wash the hood filter
  2. After a couple of minutes, immerse the filter in a basin with a solution and hold there, for about 6-8 hours, you can leave it overnight.
  3. Next, remove the filter from the solution and rinse under a stream of hot water, erasing the remaining fat with a not too coarse brush (not a metal one).

In this way, you will save the filter from fat, and yourself from problems. Please note that the longer you do not wash the hood, the longer then you will have to keep it in solution until it is acidified. It is better to wash at least 1 time in 3-4 weeks, this is the best option.

In conclusion, we note that having bought a dishwasher, many housewives try to wash everything without getting into it, and then regret it, ruining an expensive meat grinder, a frying pan or a porcelain service. Before you put something in the washing baskets, you need to carefully read the instructions and understand whether it is possible to wash the item or better to refrain from it. These words are true in relation to the filter for hoods. First study the question, inspect the filter, and then experiment!

If the filters are made of aluminum, then you cannot wash them in citric acid or soda! Learn chemistry (school course up to 7.8.9 grade).

Throw citric acid and soda into the solution? What kind of nonsense? Not only do they neutralize each other, but as they noticed here, aluminum should not be washed in citric acid in any case.
