Is it possible to wash cast-iron grates in a dishwasher?

cast iron gratesCooking on an electric or gas stove will necessarily result in contamination of the latter, no matter how neatly the hostess acted. But if the electric stove is easily washed with a sponge and a special cleaning gel, then with a gas stove the situation is more complicated. On a gas stove lies a cast-iron grate, to which fat adheres tightly mixed with dust. It’s difficult to wash it without making tremendous efforts, so the housewives ask: is it possible to wash cast-iron grates from the stove in the dishwasher? We'll figure out.

What will happen to the grill?

This question involves two definite answers, either possible or impossible. In order to give some kind of answer, you need to be sure to the end. PMM manufacturers do not recommend washing cast-iron dishes in a typewriter, but not a word is said about cast-iron grates. Following simple logic, we draw a simple parallel between the dishes made of cast iron and cast-iron grates. It turns out that since the lattices are made of cast iron, they cannot be washed.

Somehow everything is unconvincing. Moreover, the hostesses swear on the forums that they wash the cast-iron grates in the machine and nothing special happens to them. In order to form a firm point of view on this issue, we decided to conduct an experiment. In the garage, one of our specialists found an old, old-fashioned Soviet gas stove with a good cast-iron grill. This grill was covered with a thick layer of old fat, but it had no external defects. The grill was placed in Bosch dishwasher SMV44KX00R, and the experiment began.

  1. The Finish capsule was loaded into the tablet compartment.
  2. An intensive washing program has been included.
  3. At the end of the wash, the program was run a second time, and a second capsule was loaded.

Almost the whole day we drove the dishwasher and as a result we saw that the grill shone. The layer of fat has completely disappeared, but a barely noticeable white coating has formed on the surface of the cast-iron grate. The next day, we again put the wire rack in the dishwasher and repeated the experiment. At the second stage, our task was to make sure that nothing special would happen with the grill after repeated washing. After the fourth wash, in several places we saw small red spots, these are signs of incipient corrosion.

During the experiment, we invariably used Finish capsules.

Of course, we expected that corrosion could appear, but so soon. It should be borne in mind that the grill before our experiments served 30 years in the summer kitchen, and then another 10 years in the garage lying around idle, and there were no signs of corrosion on it. It turns out that in just 4 sinks in the dishwasher, the grill began to rust, what will happen after 12 sinks, you can guess for yourself. The experiment could be stopped because it clearly confirmed the point of view of the opponents of washing any cast iron in PMM.

Ways to get dirt off the grill

soak cast-iron gratesWe made sure that putting the grate from the gas stove into the dishwasher should not be, but what to do with it, because it is dirty, but still do not want to scrub it? Experienced housewives advise soaking the grate from the stove overnight in a solution with a high concentration of a fat-breaking agent. For example, Fairies, Anti-fat, Seth and others. The product is not sparing, pour at least 3 tablespoons per liter of water and shake thoroughly.

We put the grate in a suitable container and fill it with a mixture of water and means. Overnight, the solution will corrode fat, and in the morning the grate can be slightly cleaned and it will shine. Practice shows that this method is suitable if the grill is not covered with a thick layer of old fat. If fat has already turned to stone, then you need a better way.

  1. We put the grate in a suitable container.
  2. Fill it with water, to which we previously added 100 ml of vinegar essence to 3 liters of water.
  3. Leave for the night, and in the morning gently clean the sponge with a small amount of citric acid.

You can soak the grate even in the Shining bath, but as practice shows, vinegar and lemon can do better. Henceforth, try not to start the grill and wash at least 1 time per week, then you will not have to make big efforts.

In conclusion, we note that we have seen from our own experience that cast iron grates after repeated washing in the dishwasher lose their appearance and become covered with corrosion spots. If you continue to wash the grill in the machine, it will eventually turn brown and begin to smear with rusty dust. In the event that this does not bother you, start washing, maybe the grill will not crumble into dust. Good luck
