How to build a dishwasher into a pencil case

dishwasher in pencil caseSome owners compare planning a kitchen to building a lunar rover or some kind of space shuttle. They drive themselves and their hired designers into a frenzy, skimming over centimeters and even millimeters of kitchen space in order to fit in more furniture and appliances. Many people dream of building a dishwasher into a pencil case next to an oven, microwave or some other appliance, but they don’t know how to do it. Let's look at this issue in detail.

Embedding principle

Currently, there are two different ways to integrate a dishwasher into a pencil case: vertical installation and horizontal installation. Horizontal installation involves placing 3-4 sectional cabinets along the wall. Household appliances are placed in each section (wall to wall): dishwasher, washing machine, oven, etc.

Vertical installation is carried out in a classic cabinet-cabinet, where a dishwasher is located on the lower level, and an oven or other appliances are located on the upper level. The use of a classic pencil case is attractive because it saves a significant amount of space (from 55 to 90 cm). Why? Yes, because the equipment is not standing next to wall to wall, but on top of each other. The dishwasher is built into the lower level of the cabinet.

  1. First, we measure the interior space of the pencil case niche and compare it with the dimensions of the dishwasher body.

The dishwasher body may have small protrusions, so before organizing a furniture niche, you need to determine the exact dimensions of the machine, up to 1 mm, in all places.

  1. We determine the location of the dishwasher body in the niche and mark the location of the internal walls.PMM in the pencil case
  2. At the bottom of the main niche we make cuts according to the thickness of the material from which the inner walls are made. We adjust the walls themselves to the depth and height of the niche. You can get by with just one cut, then the role of the second inner wall will be taken over by the side wall of the niche. The inner walls of the niche should not reach 2-3 cm from the door of the pencil case. You can make a drink in a pencil case under the dishwasher using a jigsaw and a chisel.
  3. We install the inner walls and secure them on top with the inner corners.
  4. We hang a furniture facade on the dishwasher door, insert the machine into the prepared niche and, if necessary, secure it there.
  5. We connect the dishwasher and check its operation.

It turns out very aesthetically pleasing and practical. You really save space in the kitchen, and the dishwasher is hidden by internal and external walls, and even two doors. Behind such obstacles, the operation of the dishwasher is almost inaudible and invisible. Many owners really appreciate this and they are absolutely right.

To install a dishwasher, you will need the most common carpentry tools: a mallet, a chisel, a jigsaw. You will also need a ruler, a pencil, a screwdriver and a drill for drilling holes for self-tapping screws. The materials you will need are: a sheet of laminated chipboard to match the color of the furniture, a metal corner, self-tapping screws, fastenings for the PMM body.

Dishwasher neighbors

There is a lot of controversy on the Internet regarding the location of the dishwasher in the kitchen relative to other household appliances. Which devices can the machine coexist with in a pencil case, and which absolutely cannot? Let's figure it out.

Some people are shouting that Hansa dishwasher or any other one cannot be placed in the same case with a microwave oven. How true is this statement? Indeed, there should be a significant gap between the microwave and the nearest household appliance, at least 7-10 cm. It is possible to provide such a gap in a vertical pencil case. It is enough to make an additional internal shelf inside the upper niche, raising the microwave relative to the lower niche by the required 10 cm.

built-in dishwasherYou can place the dishwasher under the oven, but not vice versa. If the dishwasher is placed above the oven, then in the event of a leak, both appliances may be damaged. The steam coming out of the oven during cooking will rise up and harm the electronics of the PMM.

Well, it’s clear that you can’t put a dishwasher and a washing machine in a classic pencil case at the same time, although in a horizontal pencil case they can easily stand side by side, provided that their side walls are separated by a partition.

What conclusion can we draw? Embedding a PMM into a pencil case is not such a complicated procedure, you just need to calculate everything very competently, make a sketch and carefully, without rushing to bring it to life. Well, of course, you need to know about the general principles of integrating PMM into a pencil case, which we talked about today. Good luck!
