Proper care of your washing machine

How to care for your washing machineThe recommendations that you will read here will be relevant primarily for automatic washing machines (SMA), some of the below can also be applicable for conventional machines. But since they are already becoming a thing of the past, we decided to focus specifically on SMA.After all, behind them, both the present and the future.

It is best to wash all your home appliances regularly. So that it is always clean. This is not so much a safety precaution as maintaining general cleanliness in the house. Cleanliness is very important. Since a lot of microorganisms develop in dirt. And it is because of them that a lot of diseases arise. Therefore, keep both the washing machine and your entire apartment clean.

Correct installation and connection of the washing machine

Oddly enough, but Proper care of the washing machine begins with correct installation and connection. If you are installing the machine yourself, you must use a building level to make sure that it is level. If there are tilts in one direction or another, then adjust the height of the legs. To do this, simply lift the edge of the machine and unscrew the leg to the required length.

The drain and inlet hoses, as well as the wires, should not be kinked or pressed too hard with a machine or other objects. In the case of hoses, this may prevent water from draining and collecting. And the wire's insulation may be damaged, and it may also break.

As already mentioned above, you need to read the instructions for using your household appliances. There you will also find out at what height the drain hose can be located. This may be a different height for different models. Follow the recommendations written in the instructions.

Caring for Internal Parts

  • It is not only necessary to take care of the outside of the washing machine. Also, do not forget about caring for the “insides” of the machine. Keep the dispenser clean. The dispenser is a pull-out plastic tray into which you pour powder and other detergents. It's pretty easy to get. It is necessary to periodically wash it so that the drain points do not become clogged.
  • When the washing machine has completed the wash, you need to open the hatch slightly and leave it in that position. This is necessary so that any remaining moisture evaporates. If moisture remains, then over time the machine will begin to smell bad from the inside.
  • Be sure to check all pockets before placing items in the drum. Various coins, rings and other things can cause the washing machine to break down. So take everything out of your pockets.
  • When maintaining cleanliness, it is necessary to wash the cuff. The cuff is the rubber part of the machine that is located between the drum and the hatch. To wash it, do not use detergents. Clean with warm soapy water.
  • Do not load the machine more than necessary. Each model can withstand a certain weight. You can read about how much laundry your machine can wash in the instructions. But you should not think that the figure indicated there corresponds to the weight of dry laundry. Usually it is wet that is taken into account. Therefore, be careful!

Water quality

Tap water qualityThe quality of water can also affect the performance of our washing machine. So, when using hard water, scale may appear. It has a negative impact on the operation of the heating element (heater). And in the end, it can disable it. To prevent this from happening, you can use a few of our tips. But before we get to them, you need to know the hardness of your water. If you live in Russia in a city apartment, then most likely the tap water from your pipes leaves much to be desired. At least in most cities this is the case.

In order to check the hardness of your water, you can use special test strips that are commercially available. If your water is not hard, then you can skip our next tips. And if it is still a bit harsh, then read them carefully!

Fighting water hardness

The first and most advertised means of water softening is, of course, various additives. We will not indicate specific brands here. Moreover, you have already noticed most of them in various commercials. They are often not cheap. Especially if you take into account regular long-term washing over several years. But there are other more economical options.

For example, cleaning a machine with citric acid. Citric acid is used to remove limescale from a washing machine. In order to clean the inside of our household appliances, we need approximately 100-200 grams of this product. It must be poured into the dispenser in the washing powder compartment. Then set the temperature to maximum (about 90 degrees) and start the wash.

Attention! When cleaning the machine with citric acid, be sure to remove all items from it.

After washing, wipe all folds of the cuff and the drum of the machine with a soft cloth. If your machine has scale, then its particles may be inside. Therefore, you need to carefully remove them.

You can also use various filters – softeners – to soften and clean water. These devices are sold in various plumbing and specialty stores. High-quality filters are not cheap, but they clean water not only for the machine, but for the entire apartment.

Other tips

We decided to give you some more useful tips that will help you organize proper care of your washing machine.

  • Wash clothes only with special powder intended for washing machines. Fortunately, there is plenty of this in stores. Therefore, it will be easy to find him.
  • Do not keep dirty laundry inside the washing machine at all times. Only put it there when you are going to wash it. This will protect the machine from an unpleasant odor.
  • In order for the quality of washing to be good, it is worth separating colored items from white ones and washing them separately.
  • If you are leaving home for a long time, it is advisable to turn off the power to all electrical appliances, including the washing machine. And also turn off the water supply to it.
