How to change springs, shock absorbers and dampers in a washing machine

Shock absorbers for the washing machineThe washing machine is designed with parts to reduce vibration and cushion the tank. Like all other parts, they eventually fail. And if there was a need to repair or change them, then first you need to understand their device. It is with this question that we will begin this article.

Shock absorber

Design features of shock absorbers for the washing machine, made for use in different models of washing machines, can vary significantly. But in all cases, their composition includes such important parts as:

  1. Cylinder, piston,
  2. return spring
  3. stock,
  4. bushings and inserts for fixing,
  5. a gasket located between the cylinder and the piston.

Disassembled shock absorber for washing machineThe main objective of the shock absorber for the washing machine is to reduce the vibration of the tank of the washing machine. The necessary effect to weaken the vibrations of the nodes of this type of household appliances is achieved due to the movement of the piston inside the cylindrical shell. The gasket, which is located between the piston and cylinder, is abundantly moistened with a special non-drying lubricant. When the tank vibrates, the piston is pressed into the cylinder, reducing vibration. And in the opposite position it leads the spring.

In addition to special friction lubricant that impregnates the gasket, holes in the piston structure are involved in reducing vibration. They allow air to move from one part of the piston to another and in the opposite direction.

In order for the washing machine to function normally, it is necessary to maintain stability of effort in the shock-absorbing part. For maintaining this, several parts of the shock absorber are responsible. This is why we do not recommend repairing a damaged shock absorber. It is easier to dispose of and replace with a working one. In addition, individual parts of the shock absorber for the washing machine are not on sale.

Damper structure

Damper for washing machineDampers in their design are much like shock absorbers for a washing machine. However, they have better indicators for reducing tank oscillations. They are more reliable. This is because the springs that return the piston to its original position are located on the outside of the damper. In addition, in some cases they can be repaired or restored after a breakdown. In the device of the washing machine, they (2 pieces) are located in the lower part of the housing. And their task is to maintain the tank and damp its vibrations. From above, the tank is fixed by two springs.

Dampers with pressed liners - how to repair and replace

This type of dampers is one of the most common. It is used in many models of washing machines. In dampers with pressed liners, the vibration force of the tank is weakened due to the friction of the piston and the liners pressed tightly to it. The liners are clamped with a special bracket, which has the shape of the letter "P". It, in turn, is attached using gaskets to the washing machine from the inside.

It happens that the force of pressing the liners weakens. And then the damper starts to dampen the vibration worse.

In such a situation, it is necessary to tighten the springy parts of the U-shaped bracket. Over time, the liners may wear out. In this case, they need to be changed. In order to change them, we need to twist the 4 screws that secure the bracket to the washing machine and remove our part. Then we need to straighten the "mustache" of the bracket.

It is not always possible to do this with hands. Since many people simply do not have enough strength for this. Therefore, you can try to fix the bracket with your foot. And the springy "mustache" is to be divorced with both hands. After that, we remove the worn out liners and replace them with new ones. Then we just have to collect the damper.

Replacing the springs of the washing machine

The spring in the washing machineSprings are mounted on top of the washing machine. They hold the tank of the machine and, if necessary, return it to its original position. The return spring has two ends. At each end is a hook. With this hook, it is mounted on the tank and the body of household appliances. Most often, it is in places close to the mount that the spring breaks. In order to change a failed spring, it must be removed. It is removed either from the upper part of the body. Or from the junction with the tank of the machine. Both options are valid.

In order to change the spring through the mounting point with the tank, we need:

  1. Remove the upper part of the washing machine housing.
  2. Raise and fix the machine’s tank in this condition as much as possible. You can fix it by placing some durable object under it. For example, a wooden block.
  3. With one hand we pull the spring towards the tank. With the other hand, with the help of pliers, we unhook the spring.
  4. Now we just have to unhook the spring at the place of its connection with the washing machine body.

In order to replace the spring through the upper part of the housing, do the following:

  1. We do actions similar to the first and second points of removing the spring through the mounting point with the tank, written above. That is, remove the cover of the machine. And with the help of any object we fix the tank in the highest possible position.
  2. Maintaining the required position of the damaged spring with one hand, we need to hook the mounting hook. This can be done with a screwdriver or other strong and thin tool.
  3. Then you need to unhook it from the place of fixation with the body of the machine.
  4. After that we take the spring to the side and unhook it from below.

If you do not have enough space to replace the spring, then you will have to remove the interfering parts of the machine.

Damper Replacement

Dampers have special holes. It is with these holes that they are fastened with bolts or other clamps. These bolts, like other fasteners, can be removed quite simply. After that, you will easily remove the faulty damper and replace it with a new one.

Here is a video in which the English master changes the damper through the bottom of the machine. If you have a similar model, then you can do the same:

Shock Absorber Replacement

Shock absorbers for the washing machine may vary in type of fixation. Some are mounted vertically, others at an angle. One side is fixed on the tank of the washing machine, and the other on its body. In some cases, shock absorbers are fixed by the stock. Unfortunately, with this method of fastening, in order to change the shock absorber, you will have to disassemble almost the entire machine and remove its tank.

Thank. I went to repair my typewriter. I hope that only the spring breaks

The springs are different. Which where?
