Why is the washing machine humming when draining water?

machine buzzes when draining waterAny washing machine makes noise during operation, even a new machine installed in accordance with all the rules and not having a manufacturing defect. A certain noise level is permissible according to the laws of physics. However, the machine can make completely incomprehensible and loud sounds that are not characteristic of normal operation. Noise, rattle, knocking, hum can occur during water intake, during washing, rinsing or spinning. But in this article we will try to answer in detail a specific question, why does the machine buzz while draining water?

Reasons for the buzz

There are several reasons why the noise in the washing machine is buzzing and appears during its operation. Most of them appear both during washing and during draining or spinning. What can cause a buzz or noise when draining? Before the water begins to drain, the drain pump is started, so the main reason for the extraneous hum is to be found in it. Experts say that hum and crack may appear due to:

  • blockage of the drain pump;
  • breakdown of the drain pump;
  • clogged drain hose and nozzles;
  • clogged drain filter.

Note! The hum, which some call a growl, in most cases occurs after rinsing before spinning, but it happens that the machine starts to buzz after the wash cycle when draining the waste water.

Find and troubleshoot

Finding and “curing” the cause of such a breakdown is not at all difficult. How to do it right and where to start? It’s worth starting with the fact that the easiest way to open, get or unscrew. In our case, you need to start by inspecting the drain filter.

The drain filter in most washing machines is located in the lower right corner under the front panel of the housing or behind a special door. The door opens easily, and to remove the panel, you can use a flat screwdriver. You need to insert it into the slot and gently pry the panel to open the latches. Next, proceed as follows:the washing machine buzzes when draining

  1. We take a dense rag and put it next to the machine so that the leaked water from the filter does not spread on the floor.
  2. Gently, against the clock hands, unscrew the cover.
  3. We take out the filter and wash it under running water, it is possible with a detergent.
  4. We inspect the filter hole for the presence of foreign objects, shining a flashlight, remove all debris, wipe with a cloth.
  5. We insert the filter into place and tightly twist, without excessive effort, so as not to disrupt the thread.
  6. We start the machine in test mode, check if the hum is eliminated.

Important! With severe contamination, the filter may not unscrew, then you will have to remove it with the pump from the inside.

If the filter turned out to be practically clean, we proceed to check the following components. Namely, the drain hose and pump. To inspect them, you need to disassemble the washing machine. Different models of cars get to the pump in different ways:

  • from the bottom of the machine you can remove the drain pump in the cars Virpul, Ariston, Samsung, Kandy, Ardo, Indesit, LG. The bottom cover is absent in them, or can be easily removed;
  • from the front of the pump is removed in the machines Bosch, Siemens and AEG;
  • from the back you can get to the pump in Zanussi and Electrolux cars.

In general, the process is not complicated if there is a detailed instruction. We offer such instructions with photos in the article on cleaning the drain pump. If you understand the cleaning of the pump, and you can clean the impeller of the debris yourself, then replacing the pump with a new one will not be difficult at all. Otherwise, only the master will help.

cable for cleaning nozzlesIt remains to be examined, the drain hose and nozzles coming from the pump, because they too can become clogged or broken. When the machine is disassembled and access to the pump is obtained, you need to disconnect the clamp securing the pump and the drain hose. The second end of the drain hose is also disconnected from the branching of the sewer pipe.The hose removed from the machine must be washed and cleaned of settled debris and soap scum.

To do this, you need a special Kevlar cable, at the end of which there is a ruff. The diameter of the cable should not be more than 10mm. In addition, we choose a non-metal cable, since it is possible to damage the pipe. Now we do this:

  1. take this cable and insert it into the drain hose,
  2. stretch it in the forward and reverse direction several times.
  3. then rinse the hose under running water;
  4. mount the hose in place;
  5. we collect a washing machine;
  6. we start the machine in test mode, you can add tools to clean the machine, for example, citric acid or Frisch active.

If the hose is damaged, it must be replaced with a new one. Buy a hose similar to the old one, do not save on its quality.

Preventive measures

To prevent the appearance of extraneous sounds, which means to extend the life of individual components and the machine as a whole, the following operating rules will help:

  • regular care of the washing machine;
  • use water softening agents;
  • clean the machine from scale;
  • clean the drain filter of the machine as often as possible;
  • check the pockets of clothing before putting it in the drum, because small objects can lie in them, which subsequently clog the filter and pump.

So, to eliminate the causes of hum, crackling or noise in the washing machine when draining, it is quite possible on their own. We hope you understand why a machine can buzz by draining water. In addition to the steps we described, watch a video on how to replace the drain pump.

    SMA Electrolux. Water drains, but at some point it stops. And you hear that the pump is noisy ... and that’s it. Error EF0. Checked the drain filter, washed, the impeller to spin, but jerkily. When connected to the network, the SMA buzzes and makes a sound, as if clinging to something. What to do? I would be grateful for the advice.

    When washing, the drain pump is very noisy. Dismantled the filter, took out a bag, a trifle and any garbage from there. I collected everything back, but the pump is still noisy. What could it be?
