Drum filter for RAS from a washing machine

Drum filter for particles from a washing machineThe filter element development industry is rapidly developing at present. This is explained by low water quality. Filters are used to purify drinking and waste water in everyday life, as well as in industry and fisheries. For breeding and keeping fish, artificial reservoirs with a closed self-cleaning system are used. A similar filtering device can be made from an SMA drum. Let's talk about the operating principle of a closed-loop cleaning device and how to build a drum filter for a recirculating unit from a washing machine yourself.

How does a cylindrical filter work?

Let's figure out what the meaning of this type of filter is. A metal cylinder equipped with a filter surface (it can be either external or internal) is driven by an electric drive. During the process of external filtration, dirt and plaque settle on the surface, from where they are removed with a special knife after one rotation of the drum. The filtered liquid entering the cylinder is directed to a clean water tank.

In drums, where the filter surface is located inside, the unclean liquid is transferred to the filter, clean water is transferred to the reservoir, and dirt ends up inside the tray. The user must monitor the degree of contamination of the vessel and clean it as necessary. The basic operating principle of RAS with external filtration.

  1. The drum is placed horizontally and placed in a container with incoming dirty water.
  2. The liquid poured onto the filter surface passes into the drum, being simultaneously cleaned, and transferred to the clean water tank.
  3. The sediment is retained on the filter cloth.
  4. At the end of the turn, the plaque is removed with a specially designed blade and transferred to the settling tank.

There are three types of drum filter elements, differing in design features, these are:

  • filter element equipped with a reservoir;
  • filter in a metal frame;
  • frame filter element complemented by an inlet pipe.

factory RASTo construct a filter with your own hands, you need to understand that the metal used to make the element will vary depending on the presence of salts in the liquid: to purify salt water, you need to prepare stainless steel, which is characterized by resistance to chlorine-containing substances. For fresh water, stainless steel with normal resistance to corrosion damage is ideal. The cylindrical filter unit consists of the following elements:

  • frame used to mount the drum;
  • drum from a washing machine;
  • water tank;
  • electromechanical drum drive;
  • nozzles and pipes for them;
  • blade;
  • liquid level sensor;
  • control block.

Filters of this type are used in cases where the fractions have the same size, the concentration of particles of dirt, debris and other things in the water exceeds 5%, the rate of sediment lowering is no more than 12-18 mm/sec, the thickness of the mud layer is not less than 5 mm, the time of one revolution of the drum ranges from 30 seconds to 10 minutes. Small fractions that form a sediment of less than 5 mm will only heavily pollute the element and be difficult to clean.

What you need for a homemade filter

Homemade drum cleaning units are characterized by the following basic principles of operation: after passing through the internal cleaning system, the filtrate enters a special tank, after which the filter surface is washed from the outside with nozzles. To construct a device with your own hands, you need to prepare:

  • stainless steel mesh (used to create a frame);
  • filter material;
  • fasteners, with their help the fabric will be attached to the frame (screws, clamps);
  • metal frame required to fix the drum and tank;
  • clean water tank;
  • sensor that measures the liquid level in the system;
  • pump;
  • pipes made of stainless materials (for input and output);
  • stainless steel container;
  • nozzles and plastic tubes that will supply liquid to the nozzles;
  • sediment tray.

The basis for the frame of the filtering device is the drum from the washing machine without one side. Once all the parts and components have been prepared, you can begin the process of making a homemade installation.

We manufacture a filter unit

After the technology of the drum filter has been studied, the main parts and elements for creating the filter have been prepared, you can begin to create the device. To make a filter installation, you need to perform the following algorithm of actions:

  • Build a frame from a stainless support mesh and an SMA drum;
  • cover the resulting structure with filter material;
  • install stainless pipes at the contaminated water inlet and filtrate outlet, weld the pipes with the body using autogen. You can insulate the joints using a special sealant;
  • install nozzles above the drum, they will serve to wash the filter fabric inside the drum - the sediment present there will be washed into the tray intended for this purpose;
  • install the electric motor - it should be located outside, in the area where the drum pulley is located;
  • automate the operation of the electromechanical drive by installing a liquid volume sensor and a time counting relay.

The process starts and proceeds like this:

  • the liquid level sensor, when detecting a low level of purified water, gives a signal to start the pump and engine;
  • the nozzles wash the drum, thereby cleaning the filter surface;
  • A time relay controls the rotation speed of the drum.

Filters of this type have become widespread - they can be used to purify water for small private farms engaged in fish breeding. The filter unit does an excellent job of removing feed residues, feces, and other fractions from the liquid. The service life of a homemade cleaner is also quite long. The power of the drum device will allow for high-quality filtration of a small volume of water for personal farming purposes.
