The item shrank after washing! What to do?

The item shrank after washingQuite often in life it happens that just once we neglect the instructions, which, as a rule, are located on the labels of high-quality clothes, after washing we end up with shrunken or damaged items. This, of course, is an unpleasant phenomenon, but you can try to eliminate the trouble that has arisen with the help of some available means.

Restoring clothing that has significantly changed its original shape is quite a difficult task. In addition, you should not expect that after restoration, the clothes will look the same.

Clothes made from wool or any other natural fabrics shrink a little after the first wash. But, in some cases, it can shrink to tiny, almost doll-sized sizes. If the item shrinks after washing, we can safely say that it contains natural fibers. The higher their percentage, the more likely it is that the item will become smaller.

In order to eradicate such a problem from your life, you should make it a rule to look at the label located on the inside of the product. He is the one who will tell you how to properly care for this item and how it can be washed.

If something made of wool shrinks

Woolen itemsIf the clothing has changed its original shape, you can try to return it to its original appearance. Of course, restoring damaged wool items is not at all easy. Fortunately, in some cases this is quite possible. Although wool threads do not stretch as well as many fabrics made from natural fibers, in this situation something can still be done:

  1. Wet the shrunken item in a bowl of water, then carefully wrap it with a towel for about 10 minutes so that the excess moisture is absorbed a little. It is strictly forbidden to carefully twist an already deformed item. After this, the product can be hung to dry.
  2. Another, rather unusual, but effective way to rehabilitate a shrunken item is to put it on yourself and wear it until it dries. A regular sales mannequin can also be used for these purposes. But only in this case it is necessary to tie the weights evenly to the bottom of the product and to the sleeves.
  3. There is another way to stretch out shrunken clothes. To do this, prepare a solution with five liters of cool water, three tablespoons of ammonia, one tablespoon of vodka and one tablespoon of turpentine. Then rinse the desired item in this solution. After this procedure, the wool becomes more elastic and allows itself to be stretched. Dry vertically.

To avoid the problem of clothing shrinkage, it is not recommended to soak woolen items, twist them, and dry them in a vertical position. All these actions contribute not only to shrinkage, but also to severe deformation of the product. After washing, be sure to follow all recommended drying rules and then your woolen items will last you quite a long time.

Various fabrics

KnitwearIt is a little more realistic to restore products made from knitwear, viscose or products made from combined natural and synthetic materials:

  • Soak the item for a quarter of an hour in a bowl of water until it is thoroughly wet. When the necessary time has passed and the fabric has rested in the water, load it into the washing machine. It is advisable to wash using a mode of no more than 30 degrees with the “gentle wash” function. When the spin cycle occurs, the shrunken clothes are slightly stretched. After finishing washing, you need to take out the shrunken clothes and carefully stretch the product until it reaches the desired size. When drying clothes, keep in mind that they should only be in an upright position. In addition to what was described above, we will need to re-tighten shrunken clothes from time to time. However, this must be done without excessive effort. After all, our thing must retain its shape.
  • When an item shrinks after washing, you can also try to restore it by exposure to temperature. To do this, spread the deformed clothing on a flat surface and place a damp cloth on top. Using an iron, iron the surface of the deformed clothing while stretching it. You can also rehabilitate a shrunken product using steaming. To do this, it is best to turn to dry cleaning services.
  • Clothes that have shrunk after washing can be rehabilitated by first rinsing them in a solution of hydrogen peroxide and water. Dissolve two tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide in ten liters of water. During the process of actively rinsing clothes, they should be carefully stretched in the right places. Then leave the product in the same solution for one and a half to two hours. After this time, take it out, gently wring it out and lay the item out to dry horizontally.
  • You can stretch out shrunken jeans, T-shirts and jumpers made from cotton material using ordinary table vinegar. To do this, 3% vinegar must be poured into a deep and wide container. A regular basin will do. Next you will need a sponge. We will use it to wipe the fabric of things. And when we finish wiping the item, it will need to be washed in the machine. And don't forget to use the drying function (if it has one). Drying the vinegar-treated fabric takes approximately 30 minutes. At the final stage, the item is thoroughly but gently rinsed; for this, it is advisable to use a special fabric conditioner to remove the pungent vinegar smell.
