Do-it-yourself washing machine hose cleaning

To prevent or eliminate a malfunction, it becomes necessary to clean the drain hose in an automatic washing machine. It would seem that this is difficult - disconnect the hose and rinse it with water.

However, everything is not so simple, because in order to remove it, you need to get to the connection point, which is located inside the car. Let's look at how to do this and how to clean the drain hose in detail.

Disconnect the hose

It would be simple if the hose in all models of washing machines was disconnected in the same way, but this is not the case. Due to the design of the housing and the method of mounting the drain pump, you will have to get to the drain hose in different ways. But before you start doing this, you need to:

1. Disconnect the machine from the electrical network.
2. Close the water supply tap.
3. Drain through drain filter remaining water.
4. Disconnect the end of the drain hose from the siphon or sewer pipe.

Now, having prepared a set of screwdrivers and pliers, let's begin disassembling the washing machine. In car models Samsung, LG, Ariston, Whirpool, Indesit, Candy, Ardo, Beko, we will approach the hose through the bottom of the unit, for this you need:

• use a flat-head screwdriver to remove the bottom panel;
• Unscrew the bolts holding the filter;
• For convenience, place the washing machine on its side and place something underneath it;
• Using pliers, loosen the clamp and disconnect the drainage hose from the pump;
• Disconnect the hose from the washing machine body.

For your information! Some models of LG, Ardo, Beko and other washing machines may not have a bottom; some have a special tray that will have to be unscrewed.

In automatic Zanussi and Electrolux machines, you need to remove the back cover of the washing machine body by performing the following sequence of actions:

1. detach the drain hose from the body by releasing the retaining latches;
2. unscrew the water supply hose from the valve;
3. on the back side of the machine, unscrew the bolts holding the top housing cover and remove it;
4. Unscrew the bolts holding it around the perimeter of the rear cover and remove the cover;
5. Unfasten the clamp on the drain hose and remove it.

In washing machines of the German brands Bosch, Siemens, AEG, you need to get to the drainage hose through the front part of the case. This is done like this:

• remove the clamp and rubber seal from the front of the case;
• remove the detergent tray from the washing machine;
• remove the bottom panel of the case;
• Unscrew the bolts located under the panel;
• remove the hatch door lock;
• remove the front housing cover;
• release the clamp on the drain hose;
• pull out the hose.

All of the above methods of accessing the drain hose inside the washing machine body apply to models with front-loading laundry. If the machine is top-loading, the drain hose can only be disconnected from the pump through the side panel. To do this you need:

1. Unscrew the bolts holding the side panel;
2. remove the panel;
3. release the clamp on the drain hose;
4. pull out the hose.

Cleaning the drain hose

Now that the hose is disconnected, it can be thoroughly cleaned and inspected for defects. To clean the drainage hose, you need to take a thin Kevlar cable, not metal. At the end of such a cable there is a small brush, thanks to which soap deposits can be cleaned inside the hose. To carefully clean the drain hose, follow these steps:

• insert the cable into the hose, first in one direction and then in the other;
• We do the first step several times;
• rinse the drainage hose under running water;
• fix the hose in its original place;
• We assemble the washing machine by performing all the disassembly steps described in reverse order.

For greater cleaning effect, you can run a test washing mode with water heating up to 60⁰Sprinkling citric acid or Anti-scale will help clean the machine from scale.

Causes of clogging and preventive measures

A clogged washing machine drain hose is usually caused by natural causes. Mechanical clogging is not typical for it, because foreign objects (buttons, pins, coins) will not get into the drain hose; they will linger in the drain filter or in the pump. Clogging of the drain hose occurs naturally during operation. A soap solution, possibly small lint of wool, hair, or thread, settles in it. To avoid this, it is recommended:

• Wash items in a laundry bag;
• Use water softeners;
• Conduct preventive descaling your washing machine;
• Use only those powders that are intended for automatic washing;
• Check pockets of clothes before washing for small items (seeds, pieces of paper, etc.).

So, you can clean the drain hose from clogging in an LG, Bosch or any other washing machine yourself. The main thing is to follow the instructions.
