Cleaning the washing machine filter

Washing machine filterTypically, cleaning the filter yourself does not cause any problems. If we have already gained access to it, then all that remains is to remove it and clean it.

Where is the filter located in the washing machine? This part is located at the bottom behind the front of the case. To access it you need to open the bottom panel on the front side of our household appliances. In order to remove the filter, you need to grab it and unscrew it counterclockwise. But some difficulties may arise.

Removing the filter

Replacing the filter in the washing machineWe will discuss how to unscrew the filter in a washing machine further. Sometimes it happens that a part is fixed with a screw for reliability. Then to remove it we will need to first remove the screw and only then unscrew it. Twist the washing machine filterIn cases where cleaning occurs rarely, the filter may be difficult to unscrew. If it is difficult, it is important to control the effort so as not to break the handle or the part itself. If the filter sits so tightly that no amount of effort allows you to remove it, then you can go the other way and get to it from the side of the pump.

In particularly unfavorable situations, for example, if scale has appeared on the threads of a part, you may not be able to unscrew it even from the inside. Then it’s easier to take it out along with the entire snail. And only then, in a more convenient position and with an additional tool, try to carefully remove it or break it out by force.

In the latter case, you will need to purchase a new filter and replace the broken one. By the way, the cochlea may be damaged during forceful extraction. Then it will also need to be changed.

To clean the filter, we need to tilt the machine, transferring its weight to the two rear legs. Then place a small container under it. It will be needed to drain water when unscrewing the filter element. Then slowly unscrew the filter. And water pours into the container.

The removed part must be thoroughly cleaned and returned to its original place.

Sometimes debris may remain in the hole in the machine from which we removed the part. Illuminate it with a flashlight or other light source and inspect it carefully. If you find any debris, you should remove it and clean the hole. Then we install the filter element back and check the washing machine by running a test wash.

If our filter is very dirty, then there is a chance that it will not unscrew just like that. To solve this problem, you need to get to it by removing one of the walls of the car.

Depending on the model of the car, you will need to remove different parts of the body. For Ardo, Whirlpool, Kandy, ElG and Ariston - you can pick it up from the bottom, sometimes these machines do not have a bottom, in other cases it is removable. For AEG, Bosch and Siemens, you need to remove the front wall. Zanussi and Electrolux have the rear one. You can read more about how this is done in the article “Replacing the washing machine pump.” There are also video instructions for different models.

Also, if the washing machine simply does not have a filter by design, you need to open its body and get to the snail. So you will need to check the pipes and the drain pump itself for blockages.
