The washing machine drum hangs and staggers

lavatriceThe drum of the washing machine dangling and making suspicious sounds should alert you at least, and you should ask yourself why this is happening. This behavior of the most important mobile unit can be the forerunner of a serious breakdown, so you can’t leave everything as it is and continue to wash. What kind of breakdowns of the washing machine does a loose drum give, how to identify them and how to fix them? We will talk about all this in this article.

Causes of damage and how to determine them?

Some backlash of the drum of the washing machine is laid down by the manufacturertherefore, if you take hold of its walls and rock it, it will swing slightly from side to side - this is normal. No loud knocking sounds will be heard. Another thing, if it is a breakdown, in order to find out, first do the following.

  • Open the hatch cover of the washing machine, grasp the drum with your hands and move it from side to side without any extra effort, and then spin the drum clockwise and counterclockwise. If at the same time you hear a fairly loud knock or rattle, this is the first sign of a breakdown.
  • Turn on the washing machine and set the spin program at the maximum possible speed (usually 1000, 1200, 1400 rpm). If during fast rotation the drum dangles a lot, there is a feeling that it has flown off the axis and all this is again accompanied by pronounced loud noises - this is either a bearing breakdown or a shock absorber.
  • To check for damage, look under the bottom of the washing machine. Typically, bearing problems are accompanied by a water leak through a movable element located on the back of the tank. There is a high probability that a puddle will accumulate under the machine after washing, this will mean only one thing - you need to change the seals and bearings of the drum.
  • If there is a strong knock, but water does not leak, it is better not to go to the bearings yet, but check the shock absorbers. They are much easier to get to.

Note! As you rotate the drum of the washing machine, pay attention to how easily or hard it spins. If the drum rotates clearly heavily, it seems that it has flown off - this is an indirect sign of bearing malfunction.

At the initial stage, it is impossible to find out anything without disassembling the washing machine. It is impossible to determine exactly what broke in the car without opening the case, therefore, to clarify the problem, remove its top cover and see.Washer

Faulty spring suspensions or shock absorbers are usually easy to recognize. It is enough to carefully examine them, and even better, shake them slightly. If at least one faulty spring suspension or shock absorber is detected, then consider that a breakdown has been found and you will not have to disassemble the tank for fixing bearings. If the suspensions and shock absorbers are exactly working, then you have to climb further into the machine and remove the tank from it.washing machine tank

What will be required for self-repair?

A set of tools and accessories for repairing a dangling drum will depend purely on the nature of the breakdown. If you need to replace shock absorbers or springs, then it is enough to get a flat and Phillips screwdriver, an awl, a set of keys and, accordingly, a set of shock absorbers or springs suitable for this model of “washing machine”. But if it is necessary to change bearings, then tools and components will need a little more:

  1. a hammer with a copper hammer;
  2. steel rod or stud;
  3. cold welding or sealant;
  4. awl, flat and Phillips screwdrivers;
  5. set of heads and spanners;
  6. pliers;
  7. specialized lubricant for washing machine mechanisms;
  8. a set of bearings and seals for a specific model of the washing machine.

washing machine repair toolsWe will need a hammer with a copper hammer for more delicate removal of the shaft from the hairpin of the drum of the washing machine, since it is such a hammer that avoids damaging delicate details. A steel rod or stud or other suitable device is needed to knock bearings out of the seat. In fact, no matter what the device will be, the main thing is that it fits in length, thickness and consist of metal.

Cold welding or sealant may be required if a particular washing machine model has a non-separable tank. In this case, to disassemble the tank, it is sawn across the seam, and then connected using self-tapping screws and cold welding. With the help of an awl, it is convenient to pry the oil seals and pull out the old oil sealsand screwdrivers are useful for unscrewing fasteners, as well as a set of heads and open-end wrenches. Special grease is required to fill the seals and lubricate the shock absorbers.

Important! If you decide to change bearings - do not save, change all of them with a kit. Less then you have to climb into the car body and do it.

Repair damage

Repairing the bearings of a washing machine is a rather complicated procedure.

  • Firstly, you need to disassemble it correctly in order to get to the tank and remove it. The problem is that different washing machines from different manufacturers should be disassembled in different ways - this complicates the matter.
  • Secondly, you need to properly disassemble the tank of the washing machine.
  • Thirdly, you need to properly remove the broken bearings without damaging anything. All this creates problems. Read more about how to change bearings in a washing machine using LG models as an example. about replacing bearings in an LG machine?

Suspensions or shock absorbers are somewhat easier to replace, however, there are "pitfalls" in this business. On some washing machine models, shock absorbers can be reached through the top wall and through the bottom of the cabinet. This is very convenient, since it saves a lot of time and effort that is needed to remove the panel, front and rear walls of the machine.

washing machine shock absorbersIn this case, you only need to unscrew the fasteners that hold the shock absorbers, remove them, and then screw on new ones. If only one shock absorber is out of order, then you still need to change everything - you always need to do this. In most models of washing machines, shock absorbers can only be reached by dismantling its front wall. How to act in this case?

  • Remove the upper wall of the washing machine housing by unscrewing several fasteners and pulling it towards you, and then up.
  • Remove the powder cuvette and the plate that covers the drain filter.
  • Unscrew the locking elements holding the control unit and remove it after unhooking the wires.
  • Open the hatch of the washing machine, then take a screwdriver and dismantle the hatch lock by unscrewing the two fasteners and disconnect it from the sensor.
  • Take the awl and gently pick up the clamp that is located on the rubber cuff. Pick up the cuff with your fingers and carefully pull it out.
  • Unscrew the fasteners in the area of the powder cuvette, under the control unit, in the upper and lower right corner of the machine body and remove the front wall. Access to the shock absorbers is open, we change them in the manner described above.

The process of replacing such parts we have described in the most general form. The whole process is described in more detail in the article, How to change the springs and shock absorbers in the washing machine?

To summarize, we note that if the drum of the “washing machine”, which has served faithfully for more than a year, stumbles and knocks, it is very likely that it has worn out shock absorbers or bearings. What to do? Do not let this situation drift, urgently need to check the drum and repair the faulty components. Good luck

    Thank. Reassured. It would be useful to know how much the master will take.

    Can shock absorbers be too stiff? Even odd. The engine is normal, the drum does not play, the belt is tensioned normally, but, at high speeds and with a load of about 3-4 kg, the car starts to “hit” somewhere below. Shock absorbers after a year of quite intense work feel the same new ones and covered with old dust, as if they were not working out.
