All craftsmen are well aware of the low physical parameters of the strength of silumin - the most used stainless alloy in low-quality Chinese products. Even with minor static loads, water fittings crack after a few months; the consequences of such situations are very unpleasant. In the best case, the tap will break during dismantling and you will have to remove the threaded part from the internal thread. In the worst case, there will be expensive unscheduled repairs of premises due to flooding. There is a simple way to check the quality of ball valves.

What you need to have

The permanent magnet is small in size and should fit inside the faucet.

Verification technology

Slightly wiser manufacturers prove to consumers that the faucet body is not made of silumin. For this purpose, threads with open turning areas are shown; the inner surface of the body is also yellow. But they continue to try to reduce production costs as much as possible and use lower quality, but cheaper metals in the manufacture of individual parts.

The main sealing element of the faucet is a special ball with a hole that rotates in the body. Unscrupulous Chinese manufacturers use ordinary ferrous metals, rather than stainless alloys, to make the ball. The surfaces are chromed, become shiny and beautiful, and at first the design works great. Over time, the protective anti-corrosion coating loses its integrity, the ball becomes covered with rust, and the valve jams in the open or closed position.

To determine the material of the ball, use a small magnet, lower it into the tap, and turn the body over. If the magnet sticks and does not fall out, you have a low-quality faucet. A magnet is not attracted to bronze or stainless steel.
When choosing fittings, be sure to pay attention that all elements of the devices are made of bronze or brass, and not silumin or ferrous metals.

Conclusion

You should not think that all Chinese products are of low quality; this country is far ahead of us in terms of technical development. Low-quality products come to us due to the fault of domestic traders who buy various counterfeits at the lowest price.
Valves with metal ball valves can only be used for air pipelines; for all other options it is strongly recommended to purchase high-quality and durable fittings.

There are also quite magnetic stainless steels.

"...If the magnet sticks and does not fall out, you have a low-quality faucet. The magnet is not attracted to bronze or stainless steel." This is understandable. We read further: “Taps with metal ball valves can only be used for air pipelines...” That is, a faucet even with a brass or bronze “ball” is not suitable for water? What materials should the “ball” be made of so that the faucet can be used in “water” systems?

the author made a typo - he meant that the ball should not be made of iron but should be made of bronze or brass. But they hardly produce stainless steel balls....

Food grade stainless steel 12x18n10t is not magnetic, but 07x16 is also stainless steel.

The author is not familiar with metals, but he is writing an article. Under Soviet power, all stainless household items (spoons, forks, knives) were made of alloyed steel (3X13 and 4X13 according to the old GOST) 30X13 and 40X13 according to the new one. This steel was also called “surgical” all medical instruments were also made from this steel. It was relatively cheap, resistant to corrosion in a water environment. But it was magnetic compared to the classic (12Х18Н9НТ), it was heated well. Many craftsmen made kitchen knives from it. So here is a ball made from such steel will be resistant to water, but magnetic. This is how you can get into trouble in a store. To determine stainless steel, use copper sulfate; if you apply a few crystals to the cleaned surface and drop a drop of water, and then rub it with a match, the chernukha will turn red within a minute.

It is very doubtful that goods from China (with which the entire Russian market is flooded due to sanctions and political disagreements with other countries) will be made from the steel grades with which you are so familiar, especially household ball valves. The author is absolutely right. The rotary element is often made from ordinary Russian ferrous metal, which goes to China. However, it is chrome plated for appearance and the initial period of operation. And after they began to massively refuse to buy silumin trash, which crumbled in their hands, they began to make a brass base and hide a chrome-plated steel ball there. I don’t know where you saw household stainless steel rotary taps.

What if the ball is made of silumin? It turns out that the author will install such a tap under water.

I have been working as a turner for 30 years, more than half of the stainless steel is magnetic. You can only check it with copper sulfate.

Therefore, it is always necessary to purchase proven and reliable manufacturers. Let's say RB (Italy), which I have had for more than seven years, have not leaked, have not become corroded and still work like new. It all depends on the quality of the manufacturer. The Chinese ones will naturally fly off in six months or a year.
