Homemade 12V submersible pump for irrigation

There are often shallow ponds near summer cottages, but it is difficult to take water from them with a bucket: you have to walk along the bottom, dirt rises when you collect it, and the water is very cloudy. There is a simple way out of the situation - to make a basic submersible pump with a centrifugal impeller. The height of water rise is within 2–3 meters, which is enough for domestic needs.

Tools and materials

Prepare two 12 V electric motors, you can take them from car windshield wipers (or buy one powerful motor for Ali Express). Pieces of plastic pipes of various diameters, sizes are selected taking into account the parameters of electric motors. You need epoxy glue and cold welding, a grinder, a drill with a set of drills, a strip of galvanized sheet steel, a piece of flat plastic, a pipe bend and a flexible hose. You will need a wire with a diameter of 0.5 mm, a cable with a switch, for power you need to have a 12V battery, possibly from a motorcycle. The couplings are made from an old telescopic antenna from the receiver; wire is needed to support the axis. Sheet steel is cut with metal scissors.

Manufacturing technology

Saw off a piece of about 2–3 cm from the antenna, the diameter should be slightly smaller than the diameter of the rotor shaft.

Connect the two engines, press the coupling onto the front end of the first rotor and the rear end of the second. The motors must be perfectly aligned, check this by rotating the shaft by hand.

In this position, apply epoxy glue to the surfaces of the engines and attach the wooden strips. A minimum of two of them is required, only this quantity will provide the necessary reliability.

After the glue has dried, solder the power cables to the motor outputs; connections should only be parallel. The length of the cable corresponds to the distance from the place where the pump is immersed to the location of the battery. Observe polarity, insulate solders.

Place the prepared motors in a plastic pipe. Its diameter and length should ensure their free placement. To fix the elements in the pipe, first wrap strips of cold welding around the perimeter of each engine. Make sure that the rotor shaft is located in the center of the pipe and is strictly along its axis.

Carefully seal the front part of the pump with cold welding, leaving only the rotating shaft exposed.

Impeller manufacturing

Cut a circle from galvanized steel, find its center and drill a hole. The diameter must correspond to the diameter of the axis of rotation.

Using tin snips, cut four rectangles for the pump blades. Glue them vertically to the circle. Make sure that all elements are positioned strictly vertically.

Prepare a second circle of sheet steel and drill a hole. Now its diameter is larger, within two centimeters. Water will be sucked through it.
Apply epoxy and glue the first part of the impeller with blades to it. All planes should be at an angle of 90 degrees, the circles should be parallel.
At the exit, install a wire support element. It should be bent into a ring, and legs should be made at the ends to improve the strength of the fastening. Glue them, but do not forget to maintain alignment.

Pump housing manufacturing

Cut a piece of plastic pipe, select the dimensions according to the diameter of the wheel and its distance from the pipe with the engines.

Glue it to the plastic circle, making sure that the parts are perpendicular.

Use a feather drill to make a hole. Its diameter should be the same as the inlet hole on the pump wheel.
Make a hole on the side of the impeller housing; the diameter is selected taking into account the dimensions of the elbow. To speed up the process, you can use an electric soldering iron.

Place a piece of plastic pipe approximately 3–4 cm long onto the housing. Its passage diameter should correspond to the outer diameter of the motor housing and fit in with a slight tension.

Insert the impeller with motors into the housing, first apply a strip of cold welding around the circumference of the pipe. Adjust the position of the parts. In the center of the water inlet hole on the housing there should be the same device for supporting the impeller shaft as on the pump wheel. During rotation, it must rest in two places.

Attach an elbow to the water outlet from the housing, the second hole facing the direction of the hose. Carefully treat all contact areas with mastic.

Close the inlet hole of the pump housing with a suitable cover and glue it with epoxy glue.

Insert a flexible hose into the elbow, secure and seal the entry point. Tie the hose to the body of the submersible pump and connect it to the battery.

Make sure that the suction hole is located above the level of the bottom of the reservoir and does not pick up dirt.

Conclusion

It is recommended to use the pump for a short time - the housing of automobile engines cannot protect against water penetration for a long period of time; it will enter through the rotor shaft bearing. It is very difficult to find sealed types with a housing of at least IP 67, and they are expensive.
