Handmade hinge

An urgent need was a hinge on an iron door from a square pipe to the utility room. I didn’t find it in the workshop, but I didn’t want to go to the market, and then I figured out how to easily and quickly get out of the situation. In addition, the time spent on replacing the usual loop with a home-made knot is so small (literally 2-3 minutes) that every lover of homemade products should certainly know this method.

What do we need

Materials:
  • Threaded rod (with a large step) with a diameter of 12 mm and a length of 5-7 cm;
  • 4 threaded nuts for stud.

Instruments:
  • Welding machine.

Preparing a makeshift loop

At the edges of the stud, twist two nuts on the side. We position them so that the extremes are no further than 5 mm from the end of the stud. At the same time, the internal nuts should not be in contact with the external ones - the same interval should be left between them.

During the work of a home-made hinge, the axle loads will be minimal, so there is no need to worry about the fact that sooner or later it will fail - the joints will remain operational until they are completely rusted.

Weld a loop

Handmade hinge

We expose the iron structure (for the convenience of work it is better to give it a horizontal position). We apply a homemade loop in such a way that its axis is between the edges of the pipes of the future door and its frame and is parallel to it. We carry out welding work as follows: with the frame we connect the lower nuts at both ends of the hinge, with the movable door - the upper ones. This will provide maximum reliability and resistance to stress.

It is worthwhile to make a slight inaccuracy and weld the hinge at a slight angle with respect to the frame and door leaf, as the whole idea becomes a meaningless waste of energy and the translation of materials. Such a hinge will not last a day - it will only be enough to open the door just a few times, and the skew will make itself felt by breaking the welded nuts. Therefore, when performing work, it is necessary to observe high accuracy of the marking and it is better to use a substrate for the stud so that the correctly set joint does not move during welding.

Safety precautions

Work with the welding machine implies the presence of personal protective equipment, and the welding mask is not its only attribute. On hands there should be mittens (gloves), and the welder himself - in a work jacket.
The result is an excellent connection that will serve no less than the original loop.

Cool, I'll take it into service, sometimes you need to quickly and cheaply hang something in the garden;)
But it’s embarrassing that the threaded rods can be of poor quality thread and the thread will not withstand heavy loads.

Well, the thread will be cut, and what will change? blush
You don’t have to lift the door ... laughing

When the door is opened 180 degrees, a nut that is movable relative to the stud will move halfway through the thread (0.8 m). Or the stud relative to the movable nuts will rotate the same distance. And ultimately it's a short-lived design.

Inconvenient thing. The problem is the area welded. You don’t really press on the nut. An option only for absolutely hopeless situations. I don’t care at all. I have got so many different factory loops in the past. Now you don’t know what to do. Go to different options.

if you need an area for welding, you can tighten two or three nuts. Now any loops are served under any weight in almost any building program. This is an option nakraynyak.

The price of a hairpin and four nuts. It is equal to two finished loops.

This is true, but I always have studs with nuts, and I need to get out of the city behind the loops;)
Here it is all about a quick way to do it, and with a certain nathnenni you can also make loops on a machine tool. I’ve got 1/2 piece of pipe made from a piece of pelt in their garden with a rod of a slightly smaller diameter, they have been working successfully for several years and I think they will last longer than the purchased ones, because there’s nothing to break!
