Quite often, when making wood crafts, it becomes necessary to apply various symbols, for example, letters and numbers, to the surface of wooden products.
This operation can be performed in various ways, for example, simply drawing signs with a felt-tip pen, gluing them by cutting them out of paper or cardboard, or burning them by applying pre-made and hot sign blanks to the surface.

There is another way to apply letters and numbers to wooden surfaces, which is to extrude them. Below we will look at this very easy-to-implement method, the implementation of which requires a little patience and some materials and tools.

We will need:

  • a piece of annealed (knitting) wire;
  • long-nose pliers (platypuses);
  • hammer with a flat head;
  • varnish and paint.

The process of extruding signs on the surface of wood

1. First, you should make a set of all the necessary signs using a pair of platypuses, using annealed wire. Moreover, some elements of signs can be unified.
Consider, for example, numbers. There is no point in bending everything from the wire. Thus, the blank of a unit can be used to extrude part of a four.The elements three and four can be used to form five. If you turn a six over, you get a nine, etc.

2. Next, to avoid mistakes, you can draw a sequence of signs on the surface of the wood with a pencil or marker.
3. Then, using a temporary stencil, we set the wire shape of the number or its element, and hit it with a hammer. If the form is jammed in the wood, it can be carefully removed from the bed by prying it with a thin awl or thick needle.

4. In order for mechanically extruded signs to look aesthetically pleasing or to match the overall design of the wooden product, they can be painted in one color or another.

But you should paint the recesses of the signs carefully, especially if the base is soft wood, such as pine or linden. Otherwise, the paint that gets into the recesses of the characters will begin to spread through the pores in all directions and the outlines of letters and numbers will lose their clarity of shape.

To prevent this from happening, it is necessary to cover the recesses with varnish before painting and allow it to harden. After this you can apply paint. If, after the paint has dried, the surface with the applied signs is varnished again, the inscriptions will last for many years without loss of quality.

Where is it possible to use this method of obtaining marks on a wooden surface? You can, for example, number the hooks on a hanger in the dressing room, a board with keys in a dormitory, the end of a podium with samples, etc.

    It’s easier to burn it or write with a pencil if you need it for a short time.

    Great! Have you tried burning it out? In my opinion there will be less fuss with the same quality.
