Wing nuts, like regular hexagonal products, are standard hardware that can be easily purchased at any store selling building materials or metal products.

With the wing nuts, everything is clear and understandable: they are needed where it is often necessary to unscrew and tighten them, and quite tightly, without using keys. This can be electrical terminals, container covers, inspection hatches, etc.
But sometimes there is a need to use not a wing nut, but a wing bolt. For example, in the operation of a quick coupler consisting of massive parts. On sale, wing bolts, unlike wing nuts, are not common. Fortunately, you can do it yourself.

Would need

To make a wing bolt, you will need a regular hex bolt and any plastic bottle.
Of the tools and fixtures, it is enough to have:
  • vise;
  • hacksaw for metal;
  • building hair dryer;
  • pliers or pliers;
  • mini drill.

The sequence of manufacturing the wing bolt

Realize the following step-by-step instructions for almost any adult.
1. Using a hacksaw, we cut off a part of the neck with a thread from the plastic bottle, which should be slightly higher in height than the height of the bolt head.

2. We fix the bolt in a vise for the rod, so that its head rises slightly above the upper faces of the vise clamping jaws.

3. From above we put on the cut-off part of the neck of the bottle with thread on the head of the bolt.
4. Using a hair dryer, we heat from a certain distance the cut fragment of the PET bottle until it softens. Depending on the temperature of the air stream, 5-10 seconds or so is enough.

5. We take two pliers and squeeze an annular plastic fragment from two opposite sides, so that it tightly grabs the head of the bolt and at the same time extends in opposite directions and, at the same time, its strips must be welded (glued) together.

6. If during the formation of bends the temperature of the plastic decreased and it lost fluidity, then you can again warm them carefully with warm air and bring the work to the end.

7. By means of a mini drill, knife and scissors, while the plastic is warm, remove the sag, trim the ends and cut off the lower part of the wing of the wing so that they do not interfere with tightening the bolt to the end.

As a result, we get a wing bolt with a plastic wing quite securely sitting on its head. The strength of the resulting combined part is such that breaking it by hand will not be easy.

In addition to the manufacture of a wing bolt or nut, this method can be used to unscrew nuts and bolts in unforeseen situations when, for example, a suitable key was not at hand.

    Lord! I am a mechanical engineer by profession, though I am an aircraft engineer. But for all my studies and service in the USSR / RF Armed Forces, I have never had to meet wing bolts. Maybe someone will explain to me ignoramus why this bolt is needed. It’s very difficult for me personally to understand. Maybe the new generation came up with something fantastic? Although doubts are taken. But still, I will be glad to hear what the wing bolt is for. Why do we need a wing nut, everyone knows, even the author of this material. But here is the bolt. This is very serious. You can be nominated for the Nobel Prize as the latest developments for humanity.
    Stupid people did not understand that it was not necessary to twist the wing nut, but it was necessary to make incredible efforts to turn the WING bolt EXACTLY, and let the nut turn itself away from the rotation of the bolt. I wonder which school the author graduated?

      Apparently they did not study well or fought off at all. The factory specially made bolts with heads, though from PCB or caprolon. In my case for rotary mirrors. I constructively look like I fasten the ruler on the circular ... but there’s a lot where else. I’ll not make plastic only :)))

        I studied well. I do not have a red diploma, but in the score sheet there are only 4 fours, the rest five.
        To you the same question that I asked below. What is a BOLT. Thank you in advance for your reply.

          Lying is bad. You do not have a diploma and education either. A few fours are allowed for a red diploma, but you did not know about it because you did not study at a university.

      Recently I ground myself a little wing bolts, they are much more convenient than usual, you can twist by hand. And everything is fastened with bolts in my machines - in the milling for metal with M8 bolts you can fix any of the feeds, in the woodworking bolts fasten the guides and so on. In general, the sea, of course you can twist and key, but more convenient handles;)
      It is strange that an engineer has never met such a person. I’m not at all an aviation engineer, but in the box of hardware that was once collected in a landfill near the aircraft factory, I have quite a few such bolts. I don’t remember exactly, maybe the MiG 18 was dismantled for parts

        Stop. Let's decide what a BOLT is. Describe his appointment please, I will be very grateful.

          Engineer and pretends to be a fool's sweat, although not admitted. After all, the use of such bolts and nuts is versatile, and not necessarily these bolts and nuts must bear some kind of load. During my time I met these wing nuts with bolts in sufficient quantities, so that as an engineer you would be ashamed of the fact that you have not met such people and they are not known to you. It’s common for many people to use these nuts and bolts in winter fishing rods, they don’t carry any load but just hold the reel, the fisherman will not carry a key and, with each passage from hole to hole, unscrew the nut with a key to rewind the fishing line and back to the next hole unwind pre-key loosening the nut, agree nonsense, as well as your statement above.

        MiG-18, what is it? It will be very curious to find out. Apparently I missed something in this life, like the wing bolt.

      I’ll add a little - in military equipment in general bolts that are unscrewed by hands are used quite widely, for example, in almost all devices the battery compartments are fastened with such bolts, but as a rule they are small and it’s understandable why - not to carry a bunch of screwdrivers with you, but on the other hand, and reliably fix the part. They are also fixed in the hole so that they are not lost in the field.
      But when I needed 6 and 8 mm bolts, it turned out that they simply weren’t sold for sane money, aliexpress offers several positions, but a 3-4 dollar bolt is too much. I just turned 20mm washers on the machine, dashed them in the rib, cut the necessary thread, screwed the pieces of studs into them and fixed them with the thread lock. Do you know how many times you need to change the stop position when sawing? And the Moldovan manufacturer equipped everything with ordinary bolts. Prior to this, I simply mounted the key on a magnet directly on the machine, because on the table I either ran away from vibration or was covered with chips.

        You do not understand the difference between a BOLT and a SCREW. You write about screws, and call them bolts, this is from illiteracy, technical illiteracy.

    Strange argument, camarades! If you don’t need a wing bolt, make a wing nut - it is more common. Honey nut method will probably do the same too. You don’t need a nut either, so just slurp a cold beer :-)))

    I tried it, after heating, the plastic becomes brittle, it breaks easily

    Well, let's say the bourgeoisie has nothing to do, here they are made of plastic and mold snotty bullshit, but Russia is first of all reliable, granite for centuries. Is there a problem to drill a hole in the head of the bolt?!, And screw in the key ring, too. Here in the simple seek complexity. And plastic really breaks with such a grip, and I repeat, well, this is not our method. ))))
