How to easily separate magnets from the metal substrate of a hard drive

Anyone who has taken apart a computer’s hard drive at least once knows that it has a pair of excellent and strong neodymium magnets. They are very good to use for their various homemade products. But the fact is that these magnets are firmly glued to a piece of metal. And just to tear them does not work. Usually they break when separated. But there is one secret that will help you in extracting them.

Will need

You need to get two large universal adjustable wrenches. The bigger, the better. Since with the help of them it will be necessary to create a great effort at a break. Accordingly, the lever is of direct importance.

Separate neodymium magnets from a metal substrate

We clamp the ends of the metal substrate with the keys without touching the magnet itself. It is not glued to the entire surface, but the metal protrudes along the edges, so we take it.

Then with effort we bring the keys to each other, thereby bending the metal of the substrate.

Now you can easily unfasten a neodymium magnet.

Very powerful instances, perfect for my crafts. I have accumulated a lot of old and broken hard drives, so I decided to disassemble them and use the necessary details.

Much easier to move the magnet to the side along the plane of the plate, and which tools are not needed.

I tried it. It turns out. But you are just in words. And they didn’t think about trying it themselves.

a vise and any improvised lever is easier.
true method - so I separate it.
but a couple of times a magnet burst - it was very cruelly glued apparently ...
and the coating (chrome?) often peels off the side of the adhesive.

And I put a sharp knife between the plate and the magnet, and grunt on the knife with a hammer. Done.

The magnet loses its properties when heated.

If you bend the plate, the magnet may burst, it is easier to clerical knife, put the blade in the gap between the magnet and the plate and hit something hard. About 10-12 screws were dismantled and not one screwed up. Even a spindle with a bearing pulled out of the head.

This is elementary, Watson! We put a piece of iron with a magnet in solvent 646, hold it for half an hour or an hour, after which the magnet is separated from the substrate without any effort, intact, without kinks, chips and damage to the coating ...
      Good luck !!!

Dismantled magnets, 90% are not glued but soldered and what solvent will help ?. only a knife. And bending the substrate breaks the magnet.

I do this all the time. But more and more often it is more convenient to use with plates.

I used hdd magnets for the sections of the basement of the kitchen to make them removable (and get convenient access to additional space. And, by the way, did not remove from the plate, it was more convenient to fasten them.

And I just cut off the excess with the grinder, if it interferes, and the magnet on this metal substrate seems to be stronger.

Everything is much simpler. Heat with a hair dryer or over a stove, etc. and calmly separate. The glue is not heat resistant.

I agree that it’s easier to saw off the excess, so I made a suspension strap for a multimeter, drilled a piece of iron and sewed it on a textile strap. The multimeter can be hung from the wall of the automation panel or power supply.

two large universal adjustable keys. The bigger, the better .. The gas wrench number 4 can clamp pipes with a diameter of 25–90 mm, the length of the key is 630 mm. I don’t know what they can clamp except for the pipe, ha ha
