When I bought the house, I was warned that a puddle would form in front of the garage when it rained. But the previous owner kept silent about the fact that, it turns out, water was leaking into the garage.
To solve this problem, I decided to make a drainage system. It will not be possible to route the storm drain pipe outside the yard, since there is a slight slope from the road towards the yard, which, in fact, becomes the cause of flooding of the area. Therefore, I decided to install a drainage well in the yard, away from all the buildings. To understand the amount of work, how much and what materials will be required, I hand-drew a drawing with the location of the main elements of the drainage system and approximate dimensions.
Necessary materials
To accomplish this, I prepared the following materials:
- Plastic tank (barrel) 250 liters.
- A rain inlet and a plastic pipe with ready-made drainage holes for organizing drainage.
- Plastic flange with a diameter of 110 mm for connecting the pipe to the receiving tank.
- Geomembrane.
- Gravel.
We make drainage without sewerage
First of all, you need to mark the area.I did it simply: I laid out all the elements on the ground and marked with pegs the size of the trench that needed to be dug.
Having dug a trench 50 cm deep, I began to prepare a pit for the water intake tank. I dug 50 cm deeper than the height of the tank to create a gravel bed.
Advice! If you don’t know the location of the communications (as in my case), you need to check with the utility services or dig very carefully so as not to damage anything if you bump into a cable or pipe.
When the excavation work was completed, I began preparing the water intake tank. I drilled holes in the plastic tank in the bottom and on the sides in the lower part. Then I cut a hole in the top and installed a flange to connect the pipe.
The next step is to lay a geomembrane along the walls of the well and trench so that they do not crumble and become overgrown with weeds.
Having laid the membrane, such a layer of gravel was poured onto the bottom of the well so that the tank lid remained below the ground level by about 10 cm. A small layer of gravel cushion was also poured into the trench, under the pipe.
Then he installed a tank in the pit, and laid a pipe in the trench with the drainage holes down and connected them. At the other end I connected a rain inlet to the pipe. Here you need to make sure that the slope of the pipe is towards the tank.
I connected an adapter to the hole in the neck of the tank and installed another grate, into which water will flow if the lawn floods. This pin will also serve as a well vent.
Having assembled all the elements into a single structure, he continued adding gravel until he filled the pipe and aligned it with the upper edge of the tank. After that, I wrapped the remaining membrane on top of the gravel bed and covered it with the excavated soil.
All that remains is to remove the remaining soil from the site and the storm drainage system from the garage is ready!
