6 Ways to Prevent Nut Loosening

Threaded connections are quite reliable and effective. They are considered one of the most common and cost-effective. However, when exposed to vibration, there is a possibility of their weakening. This can often be seen in the example of nuts, randomly untwisted during operation of various devices. Therefore, methods have been developed that can reduce this effect or completely eliminate it.

Ways to Avoid Loosening the Nut

1. Use the washer. This method is one of the most common. It is used in the manufacture of household appliances and some types of industrial equipment. It does not have a high degree of reliability and provides protection against arbitrary unwinding. A soft metal washer is put on the thread, and then a nut is tightened, squeezing it.

2. Washer and Grover. A more reliable method, practiced, rather than the transport industry. Protects the threaded connection from arbitrary loosening even in the presence of slight vibration. First, a regular washer is put on the thread, and then a grover. Then tighten the nut. Grover here serves as a kind of spring, creating a tension that prevents unwinding.

3. Special nut with lock. The method using a special nut cannot be called the most effective. However, it takes place in world practice, and is used in some types of production.

4. Using a thread lock. The composition is applied to the place where the nut will be located, after which it is put on the thread. This is a fairly effective way to prevent arbitrary loosening, but its effectiveness is affected by temperature changes, high humidity and exposure to active substances. Therefore, its scope is limited.

5. The use of two or more nuts. One of the most reliable methods. Two nuts are screwed onto the thread at once. After clamping the first, a separate tightening of the second is carried out, holding the first in its original position and even trying to unscrew it a little.

6. Fixing with a cotter pin. This is the most reliable method that can withstand almost any external impact and strong vibration. It is used in critical areas. The nut is fully tightened. Then, using a drill and a thin drill, make a hole piercing it with the bolt. A hairpin is inserted into the resulting hole, the antennae of which are unbent, preventing loss. Such a nut can only be loosened with a very strong rotational action in the direction of the thread.

Grover prevents unwinding due to the fact that it crashes into connected surfaces

Accordingly, if you put it with a simple washer, as they say in the article, then the meaning of the grower disappears.

This cranks write. Grover can be installed with or without washer. There is no difference.

For two years he was an airplane technician (after a university), all nuts on either cotter pins or nichrome wire. Moreover, the cotter pins were not just loose, but they were cut into a castellated nut, the wire was also twisted in a special way

Well, about the nichrome wire you specifically bent. and yes, the cotter pins are countered differently. The most common cotter pin lock method is ANCHOR. It is possible from the nut to the end of the bolt, and the other end into the slot of the nut, which is most often more convenient.

Not a Grover, but a Grover puck. And there is, for example, the SHEZ puck, Yegorov’s puck lock. And much more.

The documentation uses "Grover", "Grover puck" is used extremely rarely. Both that and that is the correct definition.
And so as not to unwind, you can apply a couple of turns of thread. Screw the nut onto the thread.

And you can salt the thread in the place where the nut will be.

The most reliable and least labor-consuming is thread punching along with a touch with a nut, you can argue with the cotter pin for reliability because the cotter pin can go out and fall out, and the corroded nut will not loosen if desired

Putting a flat washer under Grover’s washer is pointless. The nut will give itself along with both washers, because a flat washer does not hold anything to the component being pulled together. Only Grover’s washer should be put in; it crashes into the nut and body of the part.

The Grover does not allow the nut to be unscrewed due to the fact that this is a CUTTING WASHER, one end of which is higher than the other, roughly speaking, it is SPRING. And whether there is a puck under it or not, does not play any role. Due to the action of the spring, the nut will never turn away.

Yes, I was already here, it turns out. There is a very good book by Pavel Orlov Fundamentals of Design. There, among other things, methods of fixing nuts are painted from and to.

In the era of collective farms, one umka so that the wheels of the tractor do not unscrew - before twisting, cut the threads. True, then, without a blowtorch and a chisel, the nuts could not be unscrewed.

The most reliable methods of fixing the nut are the CAPLIN (if there is a hole in the bolt for this), GROVER and, if space permits, the second nut. This is by the way the most bespontovy way.
The best thing is to use a disposable self-locking nut, but it is only in aviation and space.

And you can just saw the protruding part of the bolt, and spread them apart with a screwdriver or chisel. This is usually done when it is no longer intended to untwist this connection. Although you can easily untwist it, it’s only a little harder than cotter pin.

Then it’s easier to weld the nut to the bolt forever.

The Grover is never installed with a regular washer, the principle of the Grover is to work on a fixed surface, and the washer is not. In this case, the very purpose of the grower is lost, because he, together with the puck, will turn away. But I know one more way that Germany may have come up with, at least Audi auto plants use it.The nut itself is initially made slightly flattened, it is twisted only once and it is dead.

In addition to all of the above, do not use galvanized fasteners in critical places. Zinc metal is soft and on the thread it loosens over time, tested in practice.
