How to get a key chip from a lock

In life, there are many cases where failure catches a surprise. And basically, a person is not ready for it. For example, it so happened that a key broke in the lock and a piece remained inside the lock cylinder. What to do? Well, of course, if the chip sticks out enough to hook it with pliers with thin lips, then everything is clear: we hook on the tip and pull it out. But what if the key is broken and the chip does not stick out?
I will show you two reliable ways of how to remove a broken key, leaving the lock absolutely working after all the manipulations.

We remove the key chip from the lock

Before proceeding directly to extraction, it is necessary to arrange the key groove exactly vertically, since if the moving cylinder of the larva is not vertical, the key will be impossible to remove.

Method One: Scissors

As a rule, a stuck chip can be tipped with a tip of a pair of scissors. The scissors are easy to get, their ends are in most cases always sharp. Therefore, we insert the tip into the recess and creating an effort on the chip and in the direction of its extraction, we try to pull out this fragment.
How to get a key chip from a lock

In thirty percent of cases, this method works, of course, it all depends on how the key was broken.
How to get a key chip from a lock

In this case, I show clearly that everything worked out, although I still had to tinker.
Scissors are just an example, as they are easier to find. But in general, an awl, a sharp knife and other items will do.

Second way: drilling a groove

Now we turn to a complex method, but more effective.
The theory is this: in the immediate vicinity of the debris, it is necessary to drill a groove with a thin drill (1.5-2 mm). To do this, parallel to the key you need to drill a hole to a depth of about 2 mm. Then, from the side, drill a hole, turning it into a groove. And then at the same time, at the same time, drill a key fragment itself, for a better hook.
How to get a key chip from a lock

So let's get started. Do it better with a cordless screwdriver. We drill a hole at a distance of about 1 mm from the groove and a depth of about 1.5-2 mm.
How to get a key chip from a lock

Next, we turn the drill at an angle and drill obliquely.
How to get a key chip from a lock

Here you need to be especially careful, as the drill can be easily broken. Especially if it accidentally jumps off. In no case should you rush.
If the groove is even, we drill a piece of the key.
How to get a key chip from a lock

Well, then we take the scissors and take out the chip without too much effort.
How to get a key chip from a lock

The tip fits perfectly in the groove and in the hole to the key.

We got this stub.

Checking the operation of the larva

Now, check the bot for performance. We insert another key and turn.
How to get a key chip from a lock

First one way, then the other way.
How to get a key chip from a lock

The lock is fully operational.
How to get a key chip from a lock

Now you need to determine the reasons why the key was broken and eliminate them.
And in order not to encounter such problems, you need to more often lubricate all parts of the lock and make sure that everything works without jamming.

The article is about nothing ... The most important thing is not told - the key usually breaks if everything is spinning badly, i.e. slightly rusted or silted with dirt, in general there is not enough lubricant.
In this case, no scissors will help, for a start everything needs to be carefully lubricated, preferably with penetrating lubricant. And then the key chip almost pops up itself!

      Great article! Author hammer!
The key breaks from excessive efforts, due to the fact that the bolt can wedge. The point is not rust, Vasya! If you use the lock every day, then where does the rust on the key come from ...
Of course, I did not drill, but I picked a stub with a knife. Although Che explain to you ...

        Rude not to roll bags;)
I’ve got a couple of handfuls of broken keys, so I know little about what to talk about. Break everywhere, a friend in the car broke down. And lubricating any equipment is useful, it’s a pity that you still don’t know;)
So, it’s clear that modern keys are made of powder metal and they are very fragile, but when without lubrication, the key hardly comes in and out of the larva and from these efforts (as a rule people are pulled out by swinging) it breaks.
If this case is lubricated, then the key lasts much longer. Sometimes, of course, someone tries to hurt his carcass, usually fatally. And it’s best to get it with an awl, I have a couple of pieces made from a gypsy needle, or even turn it over and knock it to fall out myself.

To replace the larva, you first need to remove the key chip from it. Then insert the key and open the door if the key is broken when opened. Then, with the door open, find the position where the larva is removed from the lock, having previously unscrewed the fixing screw from it.

We take a regular file from a manual jigsaw, insert it into the gap between the key fragment and the borehole, slightly rotate the file so that it clings to the chip with its teeth, spray WD-40 and remove the chip. Easy and simple and without all these drills.

Do you always carry a jigsaw file, awl, scissors, drills, screwdriver with you? The key usually breaks while opening the lock. And not all neighbors have jigsaw files, screwdrivers and very thin drills at home.

That's just the point that it is absolutely impossible to lubricate locks. It is the thickening grease that over time becomes the cause of the breakdown of the key.A lock that has never been lubricated works like a watch. In any case, I have three locks older than 20 years that work without lubrication, and open without any effort.

Due to the fact that the masks of the castle actually have a through hole, and if the castle is also located on the front door, an air stream will pass through it, carrying dust with it. If greased with any grease, then all the dust settles inside the mask. A locking mechanism usually consists of very delicate springs that are afraid of dust. Therefore, the mask is best washed periodically with alcohol or vodka, washing the delicate springs of the locking mechanism.

Absolutely right, Dmitry !!! Thus, I saved more than one castle in the budgetary institutions where I worked.
You put on the other hand a spare key, a needle, or, more often, a straightened wire from a paper clip and squeeze a key stub. Then, if necessary, eliminate the causes of key breakage and all.

A key fragment is removed by a piece of a nail file from a jigsaw. Inserted into the gap between the chip and the lock (cloves to YOURSELF), slightly rotate the file so that the teeth cling to the chip and smoothly pull out the key chip. Tried repeatedly.

In order to get to the scissors, drill and drill, you need to open the door locked with a lock, in the larva of which the key has broken. You have to start with this. And then you can go to the workshop or just to the store and buy a new larva with keys, because the old one, in most cases, is not suitable for further work.

That's right. The main thing is to open the door. And you can open it when there is no debris. The simple method is to make sure that the chip in the larva hangs and then hit the door strongly, the chip will come out (Newton's law). On the shown larva, the key has teeth in the bottom, it is from there that you need to pry a needle. with a paper clip. With a nail, bend the tip a little. (specialist in opening doors)

You are all good at writing here.
Firstly, the larva is laid by insects, and what we are talking about here is called a cylinder or cylinder mechanism.
Secondly, as a rule, when such a thing happens, none of the above (a drill, scissors, a drill, a saw from a jigsaw, etc.) will be with you. God grant if you have good neighbors and will really give you something to open the castle.
Thirdly, there are different castles, including lever locks, and this is a separate song.
There are cylinders with a perforated key - this is also a separate issue.
There are cylinders not for 1000 rubles, but a little more expensive, and they are made of good metal and equipped with protection against drilling. You can tinker with them for a very long time.
There are still many different points and circumstances.
The only sound thought that sounded here is that you need to monitor the condition of the castle and never use excessive force when it opens and closes.
With respect to all who posted on this topic.

It is impossible to put the larva of the castle in a vice (as indicated in the pictures) until you insert a new key (Second instance) into the larva and remove the larva from the castle. Therefore, the pictures do not correspond to the state of affairs. And drilling a larva in a lock, not in a vice, is much more difficult, the probability of breaking a drill is increased many times.

Absolutely useless article. The key usually breaks when the lock is completely closed, i.e. the front door is closed. My key somehow broke when I started opening the lock. It’s good that the door wasn’t metal at that time and they drilled a lock from the door with a neighbor, since it was a bill.
But why I can’t take out a key fragment from a larva I can’t understand. I measured the length of the larva, went to the nearest Master store and bought a new larva. It is inexpensive.
