Denim pillows can be sewn in different ways and in different sizes. In order to spend less precious jeans, I decided to make patchwork ones, decorating them with flowers. These will be girly pillows. I will sew two pieces at once.
To make pillowcases I prepared this:
- denim scraps;
- a pair of jeans (I always wash and rip them first);
- two zippers (I have blue hidden ones);
- fabric for lining measuring 0.5 by 1.0 m (I have undyed calico);
- blue sewing threads.
Tools:
- simple and zigzag scissors;
- cleaving needles;
- iron;
- sewing machine.
Sewing pillowcases from jeans
When I have jeans scraps left over, I cut something out of them too. Here I found already made squares of 10 by 10 cm. I collected them into a large square of 4 by 4 pieces.
I sewed it.
First I sewed it into strips of 4 squares, smoothing out the seams. Then I sewed the strips together, 4 pieces at a time. I smoothed out the seams again.The finished product turned out to be squares measuring 36 by 36 cm. I make all seams 1 cm wide.
From the front parts of the jeans legs, I cut out 4 strips 7 cm wide and 36 cm long. Then 4 more of the same width, but 46 cm long. I sewed short strips to two opposite sides of the squares. Smoothed it out. I sewed long strips to the remaining sides. Smoothed it out. I do not finish the seams, as I will cover them with lining fabric.
You can start decorating. To do this, I used zigzag scissors to randomly cut out almost oval leaves. I cut six strips approximately 35-40 cm long and 4-5 cm wide (slightly cone-shaped). I folded them in half and twisted the roses. There are many ways to make a flower from fabric, I chose one of the simple ones, when the strip is twisted, folding into a rose. On the reverse side, the flower is secured with threads by hand so that it does not fall apart.
I roughly lay out the composition of three roses and leaves on the prepared square. If the jeans stretch a lot, I reinforce them on the reverse side with adhesive interlining. Only the part where the voluminous applique will be sewn.
First, I sew the roses along the edge of the flower using a machine, then the leaves. I sew the leaves not along the outline, but with veins. When both applications are ready, I put the blanks aside. I'm starting to make the back side of the pillowcases.
The upper parts turned out to be 46 by 46 cm in size. From the denim pants of the second jeans I cut out two rectangles measuring 46 by 40 cm (the width of the jeans simply did not allow me to make more). From the remaining back halves of the first jeans, I cut out two strips measuring 46 by 10 cm.
I sew a zipper between the rectangle and the strip. Although the zipper is hidden, I sewed it in so that it was covered with fabric.After sewing in the zipper, you should end up with a square measuring 46 by 46 cm, the same as the front of the pillowcase. I simply trim off the excess fabric to equalize the size.
I cut out two equal-sized squares from calico. I fold the denim blanks “facing” each other, covering the ugly part with the seams with calico. I chop everything with needles around the perimeter. I stitch on the sewing machine twice. I finish the edge using an overlocker. If it is not there, you can use some kind of machine stitch (zigzag, for example) for overcasting.
All that remains is to turn the pillowcase inside out and put it on the pillow. Or simply fill it with holofiber, padding polyester, or foam rubber.
So the jeans came in handy, and the interior was updated.
