Sometimes it happens that we stop wearing something because of broken fittings or a single spot, but in the most visible place. It would seem that the fabric is still good, but what can you do? Of course, the lock can be replaced at the nearest studio, and rivet buttons can be bought there.
But if the problem is a hole formed or the item has shrunk a lot after washing, the studio will not help.
But you shouldn’t always rush to throw away unnecessary clothes. For example, women's linen trousers can make an excellent children's sundress. It is sewn quite simply. The pattern is based on just a few measurements (waist circumference, length of the product from the waist).
Preliminary preparation
First, the trousers need to be washed and ironed. Then rip along the inside crotch seam.
If we cut off the top part (where the pockets and zipper are sewn), we will get two relatively even canvases with a seam in the middle.
There is no need to unravel it, we will open the product so that it will still serve.
Constructing a pattern
It's quite simple. In a normal case, it could be painted directly on the fabric.But we do not cut on a flat canvas, but on one that has already been used, so it is more convenient to work with a paper pattern.
Before
Bottom width = waist circumference + 2 cm. We make the height and width of the upper part as desired, measuring on the child from the waist line up. Side seam to armhole = about 5 cm. This is for a child about 110 cm tall. We draw the armhole line with an arc, smoothly connecting the side seam with the top of the product.
Back
It is built in the same way. We measure the height and width of the upper edge individually on the child.
Skirt
This detail is the same for the front and back. Width = waist circumference + 2 cm. Part height = product length + 2 cm (for processing the bottom).
For patterns, you can use any paper, even old newspapers. Or glue together several sheets of white A4 paper.
Uncover
1. Apply the paper pattern to the wrong side so that the middle of the piece coincides with the seam on the fabric. You can cut the top part as a single unit with the skirt.
But at the same time you need to see if there are any abrasions on the front side in this place. If there are problems with the fabric, the skirt will have to be cut separately and then sewn to the front and back pieces.
2. Pin the paper pattern with tailor's pins. We outline it with a pencil or soap if the fabric is dark. Mark seam allowances of 1 cm. Cut out.
3. We received the finished part for the front and back.
4. Cut out straps from the remaining fabric.
We measure their length on the child. The width is about 2.5 cm. We widen the edge where it is sewn to the back slightly. In this case, the width of two straps should correspond to the width of the top of the back.
Sewing
When starting to sew, you should first purchase ready-made bias tape in the store or cut it out from leftover fabric.
- We fold the front and back pieces with the right sides facing inward. We pin the seams with tailor's pins.
Machine stitching.
We process the seams (overlock or zigzag). - We process the straps with bias tape and sew the back parts to the top using a backstitch.
- The armholes of the front and back, and the upper edge of the front are also treated with bias tape. To do this, fold it in half, pin it to the edge of the fabric with tailor's pins and machine stitch it.
- We sew buttons onto the straps, and make loops in the corners of the front part.
- We process the bottom of the product. This may not be necessary if, when cutting, the bottom of the skirt coincides with the previously processed bottom of the old trousers.
The sundress is ready!
Making a children's sundress with your own hands is quite simple; the work does not require special knowledge and does not take much time. It will keep your child comfortable and cool in the summer heat.
