Felt hippopotamus. Having tried my hand at sewing an alphabet from felt for a baby, I decided that the experiment was a success and I could begin implementing the second part of the plan - making a full-fledged alphabet. The essence of the idea: for each letter of the felt alphabet, sew a representative of the fauna world. The preparatory work began with searching for patterns, becoming familiar with the nuances of working on the product and purchasing the necessary materials. I hasten to share my incarnations.

To work you will need:
multi-colored felt;
floss threads to match the color of felt;
patterns of fauna representatives, which you can make yourself or use prepared ones;
holofiber for filling toys;
needles, pins, scissors, a tool for stuffing filler, a felt-tip pen for transferring the pattern onto felt;
beads for eyes.
And also remember the looped and hidden seams, the seam for sewing in tags, the French knot, which can replace beads for the eyes.

We will consider the main stages of work on the Hippopotamus, symbolizing the letter “B”.

Felt alphabet

Print out the pattern. If you don’t have a printer, it doesn’t matter, we set the desired size on the computer and transfer it from the screen to thin paper such as tracing paper. Cut out the details.
We select felt and threads of the desired colors.Show your imagination, let your children’s new toys be bright and unusual.

hippo details

We lay out the patterns on felt as sparingly as possible and trace the outline.

parts

Cut out the required number of parts: 1 – upper part of the head – 2 pcs., 2 – lower part of the head – 2 pcs., 3 – ears – 2 pcs., 4 – body – 5 pcs., 5 – legs – 8 pcs., 6 – teeth (made of hard felt) – 2 pcs. Do not throw away small pieces of felt; you can cut out tiny parts from them, and use very small ones when working on a collage.

stuffing

We sew the parts together using a buttonhole stitch. I used 6-fold floss. First, the torso and legs, leaving a small area of each part of the body unsewn for filling with holofiber.
When sewing together the parts of the upper part of the head, we sew in the ears using a tag stitch. When working on the lower part of the head, use the teeth. The ears need to be turned inward a little before sewing in, then they will stick out charmingly, like a real hippopotamus.

muzzle

We sew small nostril buttons onto the lower part of the head or draw them with a marker (we embroider, sew on small felt circles). Then we sew the bottom part to the top with a hidden seam. Sew on black beads for the eyes (see photo for location). Eyes can also be made using a French knot. I thought that the black nodules would not be visible on the dark purple part of the head; I didn’t have black beads on hand, so my husband suggested trying small metal beads. It turned out great.

torso

We sew the legs to the body using a button method (buttons with holes are usually sewn in this way) and the head using a hidden seam.

Felt alphabet

So the letter “B” got its own little felt addition. The hippopotamus can not only lie on its side, but also stand on its four legs.All that remains is to learn a couple of short poems about the animal and the letter “B”, and you can start entertaining educational games with your child.

Who is a hippopotamus?
He has a big belly
His eyes are big
Those ears are so nice
He lives in a pond -
There he hides his belly.
